I have a Dell Latitude 7430 that generally runs well however I seem to have lost the ability to Hibernate in one of the recent updates and all it will do is Sleep. Checking the valable Sleep states provides this which suggest I *should* be able to set the lid switch to use the Hibernate state.

1741524075627.webp

When I change the lid switch choice for plugged in or battery from Sleep to Hibernate it appears to accept the change, but when i go out and back in to the choices screen they have reverted back to all showing Sleep and the lid switch is not at Hibernate.

I have tried the suggestions in Brink tutorial (Enable or Disable Hibernate in Windows 11) but this doesnt work :(

Any suggestions - it is doing my head in and making my rucksack awfully warm because the laptop is never actually 'closing down'

This is a trial and error step:

Power down to BIOS. Enter BIOS advanced settings, and check if "Block Sleep" is enabled.

@zbook - tried disabling virtualisation, absolutely no difference :(

@garlin - There is a setting that I 'think' enables S3 block sleep (unfortunately the description is in very strange English that appears full of double negatives). It certainly switches off S0, but doesn't enable S3 in powercfg /a. The net effect is that I still cannot switch on Hibernation in the power section, or choose it from the shutdown - though strangely the laptop seems to go into a form of hibernation when I close the lid now because it goes through a bios screen when I open the lid, however there is no hibernat.sys file, so probably not hibernating :(

curious what happens if you run command prompt as admin and run:

Code:
powercfg -setdcvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT 4f971e89-eebd-4455-a8de-9e59040e7347 5ca83367-6e45-459f-a27b-476b1d01c936 2

and then close your lid. does it hibernate?

Bizarrely it is hibernating at the moment when I close the lid and yet I cannot set it in the power config in Windows!

If I disable Block Sleep (S3) in the BIOS then it will only sleep when I close the lid and it burns my back with the heat (plus battery is flat by the time I get to the meetings!

I am unable to run the code you show - seems that as the admin I don't have permissions!

@zbook DISM seemed to get stuck at 62.3% for an awfully long time, but it eventually completed, though there does not seem to have been any change to the symptoms since we started this.

When using the default BIOS settings S0 is enabled and whilst powercfg shows that hibernation is available with S0 the laptop will not enter that state, although the file hiberfil.sys is present. Changing the BIOS to enable Block Sleep (S3) allows hibernation to happen when the lid is closed - but this is happening automatically and is not reflected in the power options in Setting which remains showing Sleep - even after HIbernate has been explicitly chosen.

I had been though the Dell link that you posted before I created this question, therefore I know that they are making no difference. The only thing that makes a difference is enabling block sleep in the BIOS.

Tuneup plus ran a long period but everything was good.
(It took 43 minutes and 58 seconds to complete the operations.)

These are trial and error steps:

See if creating a new user and power troubleshooter makes any difference:

Administrative command prompt:
net user test0310 /add
msdt.exe -id PowerDiagnostic

Turn fast startup on > turn hibernation off > reboot > turn hibernation on > test > turn fast startup off

I bit the bullet today and downloaded the iso from uudump and have just completed an in-place installation which has resolved the issues - the three states survive doing a lid close, power button and sleep button.

1741636536885.webp
The power states are also now showing correctly.

1741636640628.webp

What the corruption issue was I do not know, but it did take Windows 2½hrs to do the re-install!

Many thanks for all your efforts - I now need to run Macrium to get a good backup!
