Hi guys. First post in this forum. I just started using Windows 11 a few days ago, and I am in the process of setting up the computer to my liking. I don't recall if I had OneNote in my W10 or not but last night I clicked on it to see what it was, I had never clicked on OneNote before and right away I knew it was not for me. So, I unpinned it from Start menu and proceeded to uninstall it from Apps in Settings. After a few seconds, OneNote appeared to uninstall and that was that.

A few hours later, I realized the thing even though it was not showing up anymore on Apps, OneNote still appeared in All in Start menu, and not only that but also this morning I saw the app set itself up as starting with the computer. Using Search for OneNote led me to the app. So, the app is still in the computer.

And now, I really want to get rid of it. I haven't used Power shell yet to unistall anything in W11 but a little while I tried to uninstall OneNote using Power shell, and One Note did not get uninstalled:

I used this below:

Get-appxpackage -allusers *onenote* | Remove-AppxPackage -allusers

Would this below be the correct command:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers -PackageTypeFilter Bundle -Name "*onenote*" | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers

I looked for Brink's tutorial for using Powershell to uninstall apps in Windows 11, like the one for Windows 10 but have not found it. Is it a bad idea to use Powershell or command prompt to uninstall this type of apps in Windows 11? In W10 this method worked pretty good, maybe not so good in W11? Please tell me.

Welcome, Bo. Here's Brink's tutorial for Windows 11 you were speaking of.

What I do is use Revo Uninstaller Free. You would find it under the Apps section in the left pane of Revo. If Revo does not see it since you partially uninstalled it, go to the store and install it again. Then remove it with Revo.
When uninstall is complete, you will have the option to scan for all leftover reg entries and files. Scan for and remove everything Revo finds.
Revo is a staple on every system I've owned for many years.

Hi glasskuter. Thanks for your reply. After reading the reply I did the text file to Desktop action suggested in Brink's tutorial, and did not find OneNote in the text. Looking at installed Apps again in Settings I found another entry about One Note, this one was called Microsoft OneNote. Not same entry as the one I uninstalled earlier via Settings>Installed Apps. Looking at programs installed in Control panel, I found the same entry. So now, I think I had a App called OneNote but at the same time I also had a program called OneNote. So, I ran the uninstaller from Control panel and as it ran, it mentioned Office 365. This computer came with a 30 day trial of 365. The first day I had the computer (Wednesday) I uninstalled something that had the name 365 on it. So, perhaps I had not fully uninstalled 365, and now OneNote and 365 are uninstalled but there is an issue. Look below in Startup Apps. It looks like OneNote left a leftover (entry named Program with no name).

I found this two leftovers, have not delete them yet but I think specially the one in Startup looks kind of obvious that it might be the culprit for OneNote remaining in Startup. Any opinions?

In your first post you said:
proceeded to uninstall it from Apps
Then you said:
So now, I think I had a App called OneNote but at the same time I also had a program called OneNote. So, I ran the uninstaller from Control panel and as it ran, it mentioned Office 365.
MS has made it confusing. There are 2 versions of Onenote.
OneNote Desktop app is part of the 365 family, . The 365 version is integrated into Teams and Outlook 365.

There is also Onenote for Windows, a UWP app that comes pre-installed in Windows or can be installed from the MS store. It has less features than the desktop app.,

Though you said you uninstalled both, one of them did not completely uninstall.

From startup apps, right click on that item that says "Program", if your see " properties" select it. It should give a file path to MS Ofc or Office 365. You should also be able yo select "show file location" from the right click context menu. That shows you the folder where it resides if any part of it is still installed or it may well be an empty folder.

If properties is grayed out, it is the UWP app that has leftover items....somewhere.

You can delete the item from startup apps. In file explorer options "show hidden items" must be enabled i before you will see these folders.,
Open file explorer>select View>select Show>select hidden items.
For your user the path is C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.
The Startup folder for all users is located at: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.
Open them both and delete the phantom "Program"

I'm fairly sure there are leftover registry entries as well but the only way to remove them is to do a deep search into the registry which I suggest you leave alone. It won't hurt anything. This is why I suggested you use Revo Uninstaller to get rid of Onenote. It scans and gets rid of leftover garbage.

Just like that entry in startup apps won't hurt anything. But removing items from startup is fairly easy as I stated above..

There is nothing in Program Data and one of those two items I found is in the other Startup location you posted. I am going to delete it but the name of the item doesn't really sound like is going to do anything, but maybe.

Right clicking the phantom NoName Program in Startup Apps only gives Enable (I had disabled One Note) and Search on line.

Regarding Revo. I hate installing programs in my computers. I install only a few.

I don't like installing programs either, but I make an exception for Revo because Microsoft's built-in uninstaller isn't good enough.

Do yourself a favor and avoid all this complicated hassle you're putting yourself through and install Revo. It comes for free, or you can get the paid version.

There is a free portable version of Revo on that page. As @cheaterslick said, you're doing yourself a favor to use Revo when you uninstall anything.

Thank you glasskuter, I appreciate your reply's. It was a relief to see that program with NoName entry disappear. :-)

Revo is one of the first things I install on any computer. With the way Windows is currently designed, Revo is essential.
