Update Drivers Manually

I wanted to prevent Windows 11 from updating drivers automatically, so I used GP Editor & set "Do not include drivers with Windows Update" to Enabled. But this appears to have completely eliminated drivers from Update and the Optional Updates option in Win Update. Is there a way to have Windows relegate driver updates to Optional Updates? Seems that used to be an option....

I believe Win10 Update History had a choice of installing driver updates if something wasn't working right, not the same in Win11.

Thanks much for the reply, Berton. I'm not currently having any update issues. I want the option to manually select/install driver updates that Windows finds. But I don't want Windows to automatically install driver updates.

In Win10 I used to see driver updates under Optional Updates, which, of course, didn't update automatically. Looking for a way to set that up in Win11.

Thanks for the reply, Alex! I disabled automatic downloads of drivers using the Group Policy Editor's setting, "Do not include drivers with Windows Update," which is essentially the same as the Disable_include_drivers_with_Windows_Updates.REG you mentioned, I believe.

You don't really need to worry about it.
Just disable ALL driver updates.

The only things you really NEED to update on a fairly regular basis are...

Chipset driver(s)
vid card driver (if necessary)
Most other drivers, don't usually need updated.

Lately, because of Windows 11 and some ransomeware, you should keep an eye on newer BIOS releases. Some ARE necessary.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
To answer your question with a direct answer, if you turn off driver updates in group policy or using regedit, WU will not check for them nor show them as optional. I have mine turned off and each month or so I use Intel's Driver and Support Assistant to scan for updates. (AMD has a similar tool) This keeps my chipset, graphics, ehternet and wireless updated. For other drivers and firmware updates, I use my manufacturer's update tool. Nvidia updates will have to be found manually or by using Geforce Experience if it is installed.

Glasskuter, thanks for your response and, as you say, "direct answer," I appreciate it. And yeah, I've been doing exactly as you have suggested. I was hoping that there might be a solution, since it seemed Win10 managed to allow this option. Still hoping... Anyway, thanks again!
