Updating from 24H2 to 25H2 with a local account possible?

I have watched several videos explaining how Microsoft has removed the possibility of using a local account in 25H2. Of course, there are also videos showing a workaround but these pertain to a fresh installation.

I would like to know if updating from 24H2 to 25H2 with a local account is possible without having to login afterwards with an MS account?

It should be possible, 25H2's source code it's not any different from the source code of 24H2

Well, I am currently perusing this thread which more or less covers the same question. The thing is, I am already using 24H2 with a local account and Windows is displaying the option to update to 25H2. My desire is that, if I do it, my local account will still exist and I will not be forced to sign in using an MS account.

With all due respect, should be possible is not the same as yes, your local account will remain valid.

There are reports (including mine) that on Home editions (not sure about Pro) SETUP might do the OOBE thing (Let's setup your PC) all over again, when using in-place upgrade from 24H2 to 25H2 using a local account and it won't let you bypass the MS account creation. At least not easily. After trying to exit out of the dialogue window, looking for any 'use local account instead' to no avail, I just restarted the PC. When it booted again it gave me the option to login with my existing local account, like normal. But I could find no other way to do it.

This was on a W11 supported 10th Gen Core laptop. I did not implement any bypass tricks because there was no need. The hardware fully complies and I already had an existing local account (administrator) created and running (for two years).

The original post is about updating with Windows update and there is no problem with that.

Only if these are left turned on before you stat the upgrade, in particular 'Show the Windows welcome experience after updates...'

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.
