Updating Win 11 individual updates at a time

Hello,

Earlier I went into Windows update and clicked "check for updates" it immediately started downloading and installing. When done, and after a restart, I rebooted and all I got after the login was a light blue screen. Tried several troubleshooting attempts and was finally able to get back by using system restore. So my question is how can I just see a list of the updates and choose to install them one by one to try to find out which one is causing the failure to load properly. I don't see an option for that. At this point I certainly don't want the bulk download install.

The Windows Update Show Hide tool might work. You can do a search on the forum to find a link. I would post it but I'm on my cell phone.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

In Pro you can set a group policy to notify you for downloads. Open the Group policy editor (GPEdit) and go to:
Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage end user experience.
Enable 'Configure Automatic Updates' and select option 2.

If you click 'Check for updates' it will still automatically download and install, it assumes that if you manually check then you implicitly want to install anything you find. But if you just let Windows Update do its automatic daily check, then it will list each available update, with its own individual 'download & install' option.

It stops automatic updates. When you run it it will check the available updates, list them and is up to you choose witch one to download and install

If I'm not too busy or lazy , I will run the Show/Hide tool, click on the Advanced link and uncheck the box.
Click on Next and once done verifying it will give you the option to Hide or Show Hidden. Click on Hide
and from the list, I will take down the KB number and go to the Update Catalogue to download the right
one for my/your install. This way you have the ones you want to install.

Microshaft? Ya gotta be kidding me!
When I install Windows xx I only allow ONE update, and that's the one that gives me the drivers for my PC hardware.
Then All MS Updates are Shut OFF! Permanently!!!

Please take this tip from an old Tech, and STOP allowing MS updates to screw up your PC. Turn them OFF!

Hey, thanks everyone! Lots of info here! The only updates I really want are for defender since that's the only AV I'm using. Will be trying out the suggestions for selective updates. Thanks again!

So, if the only update you are worried about is Defender then, open Settings, click on Privacy & Security ,
Click on , Open Windows Security , then click on Virus & Threat Protection.
Scroll down to Virus & Threat Protection Updates and click on Protection Update.
It will take a few seconds (maybe more) and you should get a confirmation like this: (below)
This operation should bypass the "search for updates" in Windows Update in Settings
and does it on it's own like a standalone malware suite would.
On that subject, you should always have a back up malware service for second and third
opinion. It doesn't have to be a paid for service. You can scan via a on-line scan service such as
F-Secure

I must ask? For those of you who do not update. Why not? What do you do? Sounds like an accident waiting to happen! To me. Now that don't mean one should update each and every time. It might mean wait a week or two after the update and then do it. Giving it a chance to show "it's true colors".
Side note: ESET does indeed contain it's own malware detector. ESET is just a good if not great A/V! Worth every cent.

Some of us like to update only the updates that would be relevant to our/their systems as allot of the forum helpers
configure their PCs to their needs so, not all updates are necessary or wanted.

As for Eset, yes, wonderful suite. Also, Avira is equally as good. The only thing with those kinds of suites is that, they are pretty big
and take allot of resources to run. As I said, most helpers have specific PCs configured to their needs.

Forgive me, because I don't want any more "new" stuff. ESET takes care of malware. I did have Malwarebytes a while back. But got tired of it's pop ups and always asking for money. Plus, it didn't seem to be catching "everything". ESET takes care of "everything". I need no other. Yes, ESET costs money. But when I used all free ware. The viruses, trojan horses, malware got through anyway. I had problems with any or all of them from time to time over the years.. About 2 years ago, I tried ESET with the 30 free trial. It worked so well, I went ahead and bought the low level/cheapest ESET and I have been extremely satisfied with it.
Whether it's bloated or not. If I don't need all the other free stuff, and can delete them to free up space. The space that ESET takes up is easily justified.
The worst one I ever had was Norton. It came with the PC I bought at that time. And I paid the annual fee. And then, one day, while just doing my usual work on the PC, a bad thing happened. ? Virus? Trojan Horse? Malware? I don't even remember what. But Norton let it in and that was that. I decided to not rely on any paid stuff. So I went through AVG, Avast, Kypersky, Bitfender. All of the freebies. None was "totally" successful. That is until I tried ESET on the 30 day free trial. The first week, it caught and destroyed more ":junk" than any freebie had ever done. That sold me. So, if I can be safe with ESET, why do I need ANYTHING ELSE?

I did say "All up to You" and was not implying that you had to download anything.
As good as Any anti-malware program is, another pair of eyes or in this case, scans,
can only enhance your ability to stay safe online.
