Linux-Mint-Cinnamon-20.2 Win-7-10-11Pro's
Hi,
I'd never clean install every year
Hell these large ms updates pretty much do it for you resetting most alterations anyway so what's the point

Indeed just restore a system image and it's a done deal with a little driver and license refreshes at most.

Windows 11 22H2 On My Main System.
Cloud computing/services are here to stay - they aren't going anywhere and those refusing to use it will become dinosaurs :-)
Well then so be it, dinosaur I am.
That's exactly the way it reads.

That said, we all have opinions, but I wanted to address that "holier than thou" one. Movin on :-)
Boy, this old horse is taking wipping on this post. Must learn to bridal my typing because it seems I'm gaining a reputation for being "Holier Than Thou" which is totally out of character for me. It seems that I must add a formal apology to those that are offended by my thoughtless wording. So I Do.

It's like that LifeLock company. "Tell us your social security number, and we'll protect it".
Right up until they have enough of them. Then they'll sell them, claim they've been hacked, and go buy an island in the Pacific.

I've got a better idea. Don't tell anyone your social and you've got nothing to worry about.

Same is true for your data. ^^

All this cloud crap is just a modern day protection racket.

Since Covid, many people have been working from home. That I think denotes Cloud Computing. My daughter is a medical administrator and works from home. "Must be nice to stay in your jammies grab a coffee plop on the couch with your laptop and through your feet up and go to work" The fact is most of the world is doing just that. On a corporate level, it makes sense. On the opposite side of the coin, there's the personal use of Cloud Computing. It's a personal choice but for me. I'm the perferbealy dinosaur. I'll stay with imaging. It's what's best for me personally.

No no i dont think anyone got offended after you explained, Just the initial way it was written with no further imput was a bit belittling is all, But all good now :) However i am disappointed that you said no apologies were in order but then a post or two later you did, Ride or Die with ya beliefs!

The Bold part of the quote is because i love that you couldn't not get something else in lol

Same.
For personal data, I just feel that the fewer people that have access to my data, the better.

Fear isn't an issue. It's just common sense. :-)
Hmmm....

BTW, I heard the same noise about e-commerce/banking... "I'm never using that; I don't trust them". That's for "suckers". Yet today those same nay-sayers helped put brick & mortar stores out of business. I guess being a "sucker" is contagious ;-)

I don't put my personal financial data in my backups.
I also don't believe any of the common data conspiracy theories.
I'll continue putting my trust in my own backup strategy.
1. Microsoft OneDrive
2. Microsoft File History
3. Macrium Reflect Images
All used concurrently.

What do you do with them? I certainly have no issues backing up mine. That said, my backup drives are encrypted.

I have no reason or need to keep financial information in my personal data.
I use LastPass and 2FA for my Banking, Credit Card, and Brokerage accounts.
Local backups are on Samsung T7 2TB SSDs and are Bitlocker encrypted.

Windows 11 Pro x64 [Latest Release Preview]
Common sense is probably enough security for most home users data, lets be honest the way that thieves get their user data these days is through scams and trickery rather than conventional hacking - and honestly there is probably not enough profit in hacking into a private individuals data unless the can use some fault in the OS or other software and harness it in bulk. Of course it may be easier to hack into one of the online storage banks and get all the data they want without gong near a home users system.

It is essential that online repositories are fully protected of course, they are worth the effort to hack

LastPass hacked... Notice of Recent Security Incident.

Point? No matter the trust we put forth, if it's computer code, it can be hacked. The only "safeguard" we have is that the data stolen is in such a way as to not be usable - I can know a password but it's of no use if I can't use it.
I trust LastPass implicitly because you can hack LastPass all you want and all you're going to get is encrypted data. My password data is encrypted at my own machine level before it is ever sent to the LastPass servers. And of course, all my financial accounts require 2FA anyway.

I don't have the data allowance to backup to the cloud. For people like me that live in the country without cable have to use hughesnet and are limited on data allowance.

I trust LastPass implicitly because you can hack LastPass all you want and all you're going to get is encrypted data. My password data is encrypted at my own machine level before it is ever sent to the LastPass servers. And of course, all my financial accounts require 2FA anyway.

In all honestly, I trust cloud computing (to include LastPass) about as much as I trust my door locks (maybe a little more) in that we all keep our stuff behind locked doors, and hope that's good enough to keep the baddies out. But as someone once said... locks are simply there to keep honest people honest. They really do little to deter the determined thief. Same goes for hacking - locks to be thwarted stuff to be had :(

Fortunately, it takes special skills and tools, so not for the faint of heart; and those with such skills wouldn't waste them on small fry. It would be like training your whole life to be a hacker just so you can break in the cafeteria computer

We've had this LastPass discussion before, Dru.
Gary trusts it with blind faith.

Anything that can be encrypted, can be decrypted.

They said back in the day that Content Scrambling System (CSS) couldn't be decrypted, but it happened with DVD Decrypter. Others followed afterwards.

I think it's only a matter of time before a serious LastPass breach happens. It's a BIG target in the hacker world. They don't hack it for no reason. They'll keep working on it. It'll be worth millions.

I still remember the articles when 256 bit AES encryption, first made the scene.
A 13 year old Japanese kid cracked it in less than 15 minutes.

As @Stigg mentioned... "anything that can be encrypted, can be decrypted".
To even assume for a second that this is not true, is just silly.

Historically, every latest and greatest encryption method HAS successfully been decrypted at one time or another.
All it takes is a state run group of cyber thugs/operatives, or a rainman, here or there.... and time.

Here's an interesting website, that's been around for decades... Internet Storm Center
