Upgrade Or Not Upgrade That Is The Question...


I see many posting in this thread have seen it all. I remember running old Intel 286's with 2 floppy drives. It was a pain swapping out floppies every time I wanted to run different programs. I've seen most every version of Windows since Windows 2.0.

I have two Windows 10 systems, one listed as 2nd system in My Computers. I tried to update an old HP laptop to Win 11 but reverted it back to Win 10. Running Win 11 on a 2-year-old laptop and I'm OK with it. It took a little time to get used to it. The others are staying on Windows 10, since they are not compatible with Win 11.

I have a new Dell desktop on the way, which has Win 11 pro. That one will replace my HP desktop.

Well, The deed is done... My main system is now Windows 11 22H2 Build 22621.525. I downloaded the latest ISO from MS. I used Rufus 3.20 to modify the installation media for my Incompatible System. "I Know... I'm a cheater" :eyeroll: I hate it! But I'll try to get used to the Start... It makes me crazy!! But I'll try. All in all! It's snappy. I'm surprised because my Windows 10 was a bit laggy and now it's... Snappy! I like it. I hate File Explorer... But give me some time. I need to feel my way through this build. Moving from Windows XP to Windows 7 was hard for me as well. I installed and uninstalled it till I settled on Windows 7 and came to love it. I still do. This upgrade brings back memories. It does have its bad points, but I'm trying not to focus on any of that. "Positive I must be Positive" I'll work my way through this build and figure it out. I promise not to add any modifications to this build for at least... Unspecified.:lie: Anyway, I may grow to love the build, maybe not like XP or 7 but close... Maybe... My foot is set on this path so let's start walking it. But I think I'll keep the laptop with 10 just because.

Congratulations. Your build 22621.525 is what MS supply as the latests ISO, but if you check for updates you'll get the cumulative update to build 22621.819. An usuppported machine will get all the same updates as a supported one without you needing any further workarounds..

I don't remember my move from XP to Win7 being that hard. Now the move from Win7 to Win10, that was really traumatic. I felt like a fish out of water - but it took just three weeks to adjust and feel at home. In comparison the move from 10 to 11 was relatively minor and an easy adjustment.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. It's quite possible that I'm older than any of you. I was 80 in February. My first computer was the original IBM PC in 1981 running the original version of DOS. I've used every version of DOS and Windows in my journey to the present. As with any new OS version, Windows 11 took a bit of poking around before I felt comfortable. Windows 11 is now as comfortable to me as any version I've ever used. I like it. It's fast, runs all my applications, and runs without errors. I don't use any of the popular apps to make Windows 11 look or act like Windows 10.

@barman58 I too use autohide for my taskbar. I like having the maximum amount of real-estate for my stock trading charts. I've never had a problem with taskbar autohide. It works perfectly and I'd never go back to a space taking constantly visible taskbar.

@Lance1 Here's hoping you learn to like Windows 11 as much as I do! I'll look forward to hearing about your experience.

Got you beat, will be 83 right after Christmas. Got my first computer in '92, retired in late '94, got offered a part-time job "for the holidays" in a computer store/shop a week later, 3 weeks later full-time, a week after that started building computers. Beginning of '95 she hired an electronic tech out of a trade school but they didn't teach computers so got to train him next 3 months, moved to another town 4 months later and within 6 months was back to repairing and building again. Hospital [where wife worked] had ordered 6 Win95 computers and did their setups then did on-call work for next 5 years, slower now but still get calls.

Changing from Apple to W95 ... to W11 has always been like shopping for groceries in different department stores for me, I always find my groceries on the shelves albeit on different shelves :look:

I don't remember my move from XP to Win7 being that hard. Now the move from Win7 to Win10, that was really traumatic. I felt like a fish out of water - but it took just three weeks to adjust and feel at home. In comparison the move from 10 to 11 was relatively minor and an easy adjustment.

I recently clean installed 22H2 on a laptop using the 22621.525 ISO, then checked for updates to get the 22621.819 CU.

You may find that what's taking the time may be driver updates in addition to the CU. Mine downloaded and installed more than 50 of them.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FOUR was a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (1st gen) type 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device. This has now been sold. It has been replaced by my System Eight.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

Back home from work. Checked winver and am at 755. So I check updates again and there was another one so I ran the update. Now I'm at 819. You are right Bree in assuming that I image all my systems as I do on a regular basis. Before I upgraded I imaged my main system.

I say wait a bit longer until a few more bugs are worked out. I was impatient and had some issues with Windows Security/Device Security and Controlled Folder Access/Protection History, accent color on File Explorer title bar, OneDrive sync dropping... I'm a little techy but thought to just do a clean install and reinstall Windows Security (which is not is in the Microsoft Store!) LOL. Some issues resolved, new ones pop up.

I am second behind @TraderGary at age 79......lol. Win11 on my newer HP has been just GREAT. I go back to the time when dial-up became available in the home. My wife's WIN 10 laptop, is for paying bill's. If non support for 10 in 4 years, she will get mine and I will get a new HP. Pretty simple. lol

Yeah, there are still little issues after 22H2 that IMHO are of no consequence for non-serious home computing use, but can be annoyances for office computing use.
