Solved Upgrade question (s)

Fighting with the new to me motherboard. The system started up rather slowly, and I was able to get into the UEFI settings. I enabled the PTT, and trusted computing. I tried to restart but the system is in some sort of loop: watching the CPU fan and other cycle on and off. Will not let me into the BIOS. If I wait long enough the startup shut down loop stops but I still have no video to see what is going on. Maybe I should try the clear the CMOS.
The cpu has a graphic processor, but I installed an older graphics card that now let me see what is going on. Trying to find optimized defaults before I go any further. Found optimized default setting and now running SFC
Stupid question of the day: is the CPU fan plugged into the correct header? It matters.

bobkn not a stupid question at all. I appreciate you're asking. I just double checked, and yes, the cpu fan is connected to the system fan connector.
I am still running with my old graphics card that got my video back, and once in I was able to enable optimized defaults (I think that's what Gigabyte calls it). The system has been running stable for 2 hours. Downloaded the latest WIN 10 CU. Finally enabled the TPP, and a retest with the PC Health Check program for going to Windows 11 passes.
I going to try removing the old video card a GEOFORCE GTX950 and try the built in CPU graphics again. I'm not sure which is better at this point. But I'm as close safe for this last item to try the Win 11 install.

I did clear the CMOS before I did any of this

Thought I was on the fresh install with the Win 11 ISO, but when i install the USB that I created it I no longer see the setup file. I checked and the USB is MBR does that mean I need to convert the USB to GPT?

It appears that nVidia still supports "Maxwell" cards like your GTX 950 with new drivers, so that's good.

I don't know why the system wouldn't have booted using the iGPU. I assume that you had the Intel drivers installed. It might require clearing the CMOS.

But, as you say, the GTX 950 is much better than the Intel HD 630.

I don't know what's going on with your USB flash drive. What do you see on it? MBR should be fine. I've used it for boot drives regularly.

I hope that you find the ultimate result of all this effort worthwhile.

Good man. UEFI/BIOS can be fickle. Theoretically MBR format of the USB should work but depending on the BIOS this is not always the case. At least this has been my experience with some ASUS system boards. On other system boards you might find the option to boot from EFI but I don't know if that option exists on newer system boards. Nonetheless I get the best results using a USB with the ISO that I have tailored to the system. Rufus is good for this.
I don't think you'll regret opting for a clean install. I also highly recommend making it a local account.

  1. Open Rufus
  2. Insert your USB flash drive (at least 8 GB)
  3. Configure Rufus like this:
    • Boot selection: Select the Windows 11 ISO
    • Partition scheme: GPT
    • Target system: UEFI (non-CSM)
    • File system: NTFS
(You do not need to check "Remove requirement for Secure Boot and TPM", as the PC Health Check app reported that your system is compatible.)
  4. Click Start and let Rufus do its magic.
This creates a USB installer that boots only in UEFI mode and installs Windows 11 using the GPT partition style.

Off topic: personally, I, vastly prefer to use Ventoy for anything that requires to boot from a USB flash drive, as I abandoned every computer that isn't officially compatible with Windows 11 years ago anyway in the first place, and besides, Ventoy is based on Rufus (among multiple other things).

Endless reformatting of removable flash memory based storage media causes too much unnecessary wear on the memory cells. After the reformat, restoring its contents back to what you previously had on it can be a very time consuming task also in addition to this.

With Ventoy, you no longer have to do any of that. Instead, you can just copy one or more bootable ISO files (and bootable WIM files if you also added the Wimboot plugin in Ventoy) to it. Then when you boot from the USB flash drive next, it lets you pick one of the bootable files from a list and boots straight into that bootable file. So, you only need one large capacity USB flash drive (and maybe a spare one, just in case it flakes out).

Not only can you copy multiple bootable files to it, but also you can copy whatever the files you want to it. So, you can continue to use it just like a normal USB flash drive (but also be aware that it uses exFAT by default so you might want to manually reformat to NTFS like explained in #5 of the Installation FAQ).

Did you make sure graphics is in Auto in BIOS? If it is to PCIe, the on board card doesn't work.

Thought I was on the fresh install with the Win 11 ISO, but when i install the USB that I created it I no longer see the setup file. I checked and the USB is MBR does that mean I need to convert the USB to GPT?
Just use Rufus to Install the ISO onto an USB device. (Stick, at least 8Gb. Rufus will erase the complete USB device first. So be aware.) No need to use GPT for that, GPT is only intended for devices > 2TB. Let the system boot from the USB device. (If you look at it's content at an other PC, you should see setup.exe in it's root) Just make sure in the BIOS it will boot from that USB device. (BIOS must see the USB device) Install Windows 11. Use GTP if the device you install Windows on is > 2TB. Look at the settings (the partition part when Windows is preparing on what drive it should install Windows.) If you have trouble with the internal Video card v.s. external; disabled the internal one in the BIOS; Peripherals: Initial Display Output. Check if it's set to Set it to "PCIe 1 Slot" Should be the default setting.

Ok egg on my face I am ready to start the new install. Going into the deep end of the pool.
Somebody please remind me not to work on my computer or anything else when tired.
Process started getting updates.

I suppose your wondering why the egg on my face. Yesterday when I created the Macrium rescue disc and did the image I said to myself Place the rescue USB in the little pouch with my portable drive so as not to confuse anything.
I guess being tired I put the ISO in the pouch and was looking for my ISO files on the rescue USB.
This morning, I looked up one of the files on the USB and saw it was part of Macrium I slapped my head realizing what I had done . Sure is taking a long time checking for updates.

Finished checking for updates then reported that some things would need attention after the install and started checking for updates again. Not sure if I created the ISO correctly as it is downloading quite a lot of data, but I think it's still progressing.
Finally at the installing Windows 11 screen I'm surprised to see so much activity 99% on the USB drive. Maybe thats the ISO loading?

Got a question after what took to for me quite a bit of time at the "getting ready" it finally opened up to the Windows setup info screens. It wants my password which I have saved on my hard drive that I disconnected to do my install.
Can I manually power off at this point and not mess things up to reconnect my other drive?

So you made a rescue disk of one system and try to restore it on a other system? That's not the way to do things since all (motherboard) hardware is different. That rescue disk is intended for that old system only. You do have to do a fresh install of Windows with your "new" motherboard onto an empty disk. You have to re-install any programs you used on your old system. Any personal data you can transfer later on. It's quite busy I think because it sees different hardware. If it getting it wrong you will have troubles later on. So avoid that.

No I made a rescue USB and did a drive image, using Macrium. I somehow mixed up my new rescue USB and the ISO USB I had downloaded. Windows 11 is all but completed but is at a point where it asks "Let's add your Microsoft account". My account password is unfortunately on the drive that I disconnected as a precaution before installing Windows 11.

I need to know if I can power off the setup point "Let's add your Microsoft account" reconnect my other drive and start up again.
Well I decided to power my system off connect my drive with the passwords and started back up.
Unfortunately, I realized that unless I get by this point, I cannot get to open file manager to read the drive. Ug.

This is partly why I always recommend a CLEAN install of the OS when swapping system boards. Can you use the old OS? Sure. Maybe. I recall some time ago when I first got my $1K CA X99 E WS board. (I had been saving for over three years to build myself a Boss PC.) Just as a test I plugged my DELL Win7 Pro SSD from my X58 platform. Did it work? A: Yes. . . For a time. Then come the BSODs and all the fun associated with that. Hey, it was only an experiment. I later upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate and was blown away by what an awesome OS it was.
Got a question after what took to for me quite a bit of time at the "getting ready" it finally opened up to the Windows setup info screens. It wants my password which I have saved on my hard drive that I disconnected to do my install.
Can I manually power off at this point and not mess things up to reconnect my other drive?
Short answer: No.

Long answer: You could try it as an experiment but this is inadvisable. I highly recommend using different pw for different operating systems. If you plan on using the same activation key bear in mind at some point you will no longer be able to access your old OS via boot. You will however be able to access all your personal data via Win Explorer and Disk Manager. IF this is not the plan I recommend waiting until your installation is complete before reconnecting any other drives. This holds true in most cases even if you plan on establishing a multi-boot system.

I hope this helps. (And I hope you are attempting to install a local account.)

Local account - yes.
Adding new drives in the midst of a fresh install? Not advisable. I can tell where this is going and we both have done hundreds of installations and we are both at loggerheads over this. There is no reason our friend shouldn't wait until the fresh installation is complete. Why complicate it for a measly password? Why not keep it simple? Oh well, here we go again . . .

Access your MS account from the device you are posting from and change your password.

Ug.
You can always add your Microsoft account later. Why complicate it? Spapakons is correct on opening command prompt and typing "start ms-cxh:localonly" for local account. I highly advise that you do it if you wish to bypass stuff you likely might not want in the future. You can always get it later should you decide to do so. You don't need your current MS password to set up your OS if you establish a local account and this is highly recommended.

Maybe as usual I'm confusing things. I have an account that every time I used my old system that it would appear under my photo would be in the upper right-hand corner of the screen on my Edge browser. it's an account that I use to get rewards points. Is there a difference between a MS account and a local account. My screen just states "let's add your Microsoft account" If I click on it my personal my E-mail address and sync is displayed.
