Upgrading Windows 10 Home Single Language to Windows 10 Pro

Hello There!

I bought this Lenovo LOQ 15IRX9 a consumer model with the standard OS of Windows® 11 Home. I have a Windows 10 Pro license key so I reformatted the SSD and tried to downgrade from Windows 11 Home to Windows 10 Pro. However, after installation, my OS becomes Windows 10 Home Single Language instead of Windows 10 Pro. I tried entering my Windows 10 Pro product key but it says "The product key you entered didn't work. Check the product key and try again, or enter a different one. (0xc004f050).

Appreciate much your comments, suggestions and recommendations you could share to me.

This should be very easy using one simple trick.

I'm going under the assumption that you created the Windows installation media from Microsoft's web site and that you have the media that holds multiple editions (Home, Pro, etc.) Because your system has an embedded Home license, Windows setup will try to install that automatically.

To work around this, create a text file with these lines in it:

[Channel]
Retail

Save that file as ei.cfg.

NOTE: Use something like notepad to create this file. Don’t use a program like Word that can insert special formatting characters into the file.

Place the ei.cfg file in the \sources folder on your Windows installation media. Now, when you install Windows, you will be presented a screen from which you can select what edition of Windows to install.

Notes about ei.cfg: Let's say that you have a computer that shipped with Windows 11 Home, but you upgraded to Pro (or you want to install Pro). You may find that when you try to perform a clean install, Windows simply starts installing Home and doesn't even show you the menu from which you can select other editions. By placing this file in the sources folder, we prevent that from happening. This happens because Windows setup reads a signature in the BIOS that tells setup which edition of Windows the system was shipped with.

If you obtained your installation media in some other manner, please provide details and I will tell you what you need to do.

Also, I have had people ask why Microsoft doesn't give the choice of what edition to install by default. This is only speculation on my part, but I suspect that there are two main reasons for this:

1) When most people reinstall Windows, they will likely be reinstalling the version that the system originally shipped with.

2) Let's face it: Many people have no idea whether they have Home or Pro or something else. By automatically installing the edition that shipped with the system, it removes the need for the user make a decision and it also makes life easier for support personnel since no decision is needed and they will not need to rely upon the end user to give them correct information.
