Hi folks
There are a load of cheap USB chargers around now over 200Watts. Looks like a good way of charging laptops if they have chargeable USB type ports -- has anybody an idea of the efficiency of these (I.e how long to re-charge a typical laptop) and can multiple laptops be charged concurrently. Seems an ideal way to rid oneself of all sorts of bulky laptop mains chargers. My HP Elitebook 360 1040 laptop doesn't even have a "classical" mains charger but uses a USBC port like a macbook. I;ve a few older laptops and am wondering if a multi-port USB charger would be OK for them too.

Cheers
jimbo

Well, most of the laptops with USB-C charging ports use intelligent charging and adjust the voltage based on need. Do these unnamed chargers independently allow the intelligent charging control?

My laptop came with a 65W USB-C charger, but since it was pretty bulky, I picked up a slim model on Amazon. I also have the little in-line magnetic USB-C power monitor, and the mini-charger correctly adjusts the current and voltage to get me close to 65W charging power. I also carry a similar (different maker) 65W charger for my Galaxy S25. My thinking is if for whatever reason, the laptop charger fails, I'd have a backup.

The question is far too vague. You need technical details of the charger and what is being charged.
Charging standards compliance like PD, and manufacturers specific "Fast Charge" standards.
PD revision 3.1 came out in 2021 for up to 240w, it was 100w before then.
It does contain specs for charging multiple devices but realistically the "universal charger" will have limited ports.
The fast charge on Laptops which have such a spec is via the proprietary charge connector and charger,

Whilst many of these recent USB-C "universal chargers" will fast charge popular brands of phones, they will be unlikely to do so on current Laptops.

I use a 3.1A phone charger through the Thunderbolt ports when I travel.
Don't like having to pack the bulky charger.
Doesn't matter how many watts you throw at it, the internal charger will control it.

Watts aren't the problem, depending on the target device, the voltage may be more of an issue. Most phones want a maximum voltage of around 9V, however other devices like laptops charge at 20V. My laptop charges with USB-C and the charging voltage is 20V at around 3 amps according to my USB power monitor.

They work great, until they don't. The problem with USB-C laptop power supplies and chargers is the male connectors loosen over time and inevitably stop working. My last HP laptop wore out 3 chargers in 2 1/2 years.
