Hello,

I have the following issue with a USB fingerprint sensor with a FocalTech chipset, that 90% of the time I turn on the PC, Windows Hello login is not working via the fingerprint sensor. I have to type in my password or PIN to login. After the first login, the fingerprint sensor now is working fine, for example when I lock the PC or put it in standby or hibernate and wake it up. But for the first cold boot of the PC, it is not working.

Anyone have the same issue and knows how to solve it?

I had this on my Acer laptop, but it seems to have largely resolved itself. Try leaving the laptop for five minutes after powering on to see if some process has to complete before the fingerprint sensor 'wakes up'. On my laptop, the sensor is built in.

@kelper Hello. I tried this already because I read somewhere else someone suggested it would help to wait a little bit. Doesnt matter. Even if I wait 5 minutes on the first login screen, the fingerprint sensor wont work. Then I log in with a PIN, lock device, and now the fingerprint sensor works. But randomly not (maybe with a chance of 80%) on the first login/first boot of Windows.

Are there any power management options in Device Manager for the fingerprint sensor? It's under Biometric devices.

@kelper I already tried disable "allow windows to put it to sleep", does nothing.

Tried already the following with no success:

- disable "allow put this device to sleep" option in device manager
- wait 10 minutes on first login screen
- unplug and re-plug usb sensor during first login screen
- tried different usb slots

Nothing helps. It wont work with high chance, not always, around 90% not working, during first login, no matter how long I wait. It shows the fingerprint login option on the login screen, but touching the sensor does nothing.

Logging in with PIN or password, after first boot / login, the sensor is now working fine during any lock screen, even after standby or hibernate, but not on the first boot.

Windows biometric service "WbioSrvc" is set to automatic start, and I also didnt change anything for it.

The driver being used is the "latest" one from 2019, no other driver found which is newer:

The fingerprint sensor is shown as working normally under device manager. It works normally on ALL other scenarios, except for the first time Windows starts.

I am on stable Windows 11 23h2 btw.

Hi,
Just to say I got the same problem. New Windows 11 installation on a Lenovo laptop.
Using the (built-in) fingerprint reader was working fine at boot but suddently stopped working a couple of days ago.
Maybe caused by some windows update.
Not a huge concern because after providing the pin at the boot, the fingerprint authentication resumes working.
