USB Not seen, but I think it's the USB

So, I in fact have 2 thumb drives that the computer does not recognize. Actually it sees the drive but does not see contents. Well, another tidbit: I selected Format, and it says there is not a drive to format. Again, when I plug it in, I get the recognized tone, and I see it in the drive list. Also, both of these have been used to save midi files to on a Keyboard.

I'm thinking this is actually a problem with the thumb drives...although it is quite interesting that both show up unusable on the keyboard, but one of them is fine in the laptop.


Where I am really at, having failed to find a program to recover a USB drive....I'm wondering if anyone here has a suggestion.

Try deleting those UFDs from Device Manager to force Windows to re-recognize them when connected to see if that helps. Here is how:

1) Make sure that the UFDs in question are not connected to the PC.

2) Open Device Manager and select the option to show hidden devices:

3) Delete UFDs that are not connected. It is okay to delete all disconnected drives.

NOTE: Because the drives need to be re-detected they may get a different drive letter assigned since "memory" of the previous drive letter will have been lost when the drive was removed.

IF after attempting the advice provided by hsehestedt and you still have problems you could try using Minitool Partition Wizard.

If there is something physically wrong with your USB flash drive Minitool will inform you of the issue. It also provides cloning options and several methods of data recovery. If you can afford to purchase the Lifetime license I recommend doing so. For me, the software has paid for itself many times over.
