Usbc port not working

Laptop slid on the floor last night onto one end - now the usbc port isn't working. Luckily it's not needed for charging the computer itself. Any ideas? I suppose it's gone and needs replacing but just wondered if there's anything else I can try first.

did you open it up? is it a board connected to the mobo via ribbon cable or are those ports soldered directly to the mobo?

The USB ports are usually soldered onto the motherboard and don't stick outside the case if nothing is plugged in. However, hitting on the edge can press the plastic in enough to damage the port or its connection, calls for a new motherboard. If needing USB-C for a device there are adapters such as on Amazon for USB-A to USB-C. I keep a 4-pack on hand "just in case".

quick search for compatible mobos showed what i assumed once you stated HP Pavilion. if you have USBs on both sides, it'll depend which side is damaged. the side by the power port are soldered. the ones on the opposite side are a separate board via ribbon cable

Soldering on a new usb port is one of the most basic things any computer shop should be able to do, anyone who messes with electronic component repair (TV repair, mobile phone repair etc) could do it too, unless the motherboard itself is damaged, even if tracers were ripped off when it broke, it'd be far cheaper just to find someone to repair it if it's soldiered directly to the motherboard.

The separate board is the Audio/USB board and is USB-A only. The USB-C port is soldered directly to the motherboard (I've been searching eBay for photos too).

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Before you get to more in depth repair attempts, check to make sure that you didn't simply get some dirt in the port when it hit the floor. Some electrical contact cleaner would be good to spritz into that port. You could also grab a flashlight and if you see anything obvious try to carefully scrape it out or use a pair of tweezers.
