This sounds like a program that needs the current device deactivate so you can move the program to a new device and activate it again. I have a few programs like that. Macrium Reflect being one of them.

Correct procedure is that Reflect should be deactivated first then activated again after cloning the OS to the new device, at least, if you intend to continue using both devices. But when I did the first trial run of my migration that hadn't occurred to me and, as I found out, it didn't stop working after duplicating to another machine - which left me in a bit of a dilemma.....

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

To activate Macrium on a new computer Macrium needs to be deactivated from the old device first or it wont activate on another device. If one forgets and they can't run Macrium on the old device to deactivate it, one has to contact support. I know because I have been there and done that.

Yes, but I didn't have to activate Reflect. I had cloned one PC to another - along with Reflect's activation! I didn't dare do anything about it for fear of disabling my Reflect key, so I kept my fingers crossed until the time came to wipe the test run and do it properly (lesson learned).

Not exactly cloning (I don't use the clone option), I have switched drives from my old computers to my new computers and activation did follow over. I have also lost activation just by upgrading my Canary builds.

I can relate to all comments..* have found the various apps have their own methods for encryptions and licensed to be carried over to various new hardware or software.
Sadly for me , I am trying to hold onto an old off line version of QuickBooks. Any attempt to deactivate or transfer negates license with prompts to register ...AND pay ongoing for the updates online version!
So disappointing to see businesses operating this way when my 12 y.old software is perfect for me...
Anyways..thanks again for comments..as they may inspire another option for me.
