Solved Very Minor Desktop Icon issue

Here's something I just discovered that might shed some more light on the problem. I came back to my laptop after a 30 minute idle, which I knew was when the mouse clicks would not work on my desktop icons for the first 10 seconds or so, and I noticed in the bottom right of the taskbar a little arrow pointing up at 45 degrees. When I hovered the mouse over it, it said Windows Web Experience Pack was using location services and mentioned something about Widgets. I then quickly tried clicking on the desktop icons to confirm that they still were not working. I watched for about 10 seconds and the moment the arrow on the taskbar disappeared, the mouse started working on my desktop icons.

I already have Widgets disabled. Perhaps I should uninstall the Windows Web Experience Pack? Or maybe Microsoft would like to fix their obviously faulty software? I know, dream on.

Probably Weather or some other widget tried to detect your location. Try disabling location for this applications or for all applications.

Disabling location setting in Windows Experience Pack got rid of the arrow on the lower right of the taskbar. However, it did not fix the "mouse click on desktop icons after idle" problem. Oh well, it was a nice guess!

Well, Well, Well!! Looks like Microsoft maybe heard our complaints. (Doubt it) There is an update released today called: 2023-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5022913) - So maybe this may do the trick. Fingers crossed, I'm doing the update now.

Hello,
I have the exact same problem on a brand new Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH7H laptop, running Windows 11 22H2 with the latest updates installed.
20-25min Idle = Desktop icons frozen for a few secs, then everything becomes usable again.
It seems the Trash Bin isnt affected, somehow.

I have been using a local account since the beginning and have disabled widgets since the start, so i dont think this is related to widgets tbh.

I must also mention that i have another issue, which could be related : my laptop goes to sleep when the screen turns off, even if sleep is disabled entirely. I tried fixing it by disabling modern standby in the BIOS, sadly the BIOS on these laptops is completely locked down and i can only access some basic settings. My power plan doesnt have "Hybrid Sleep" or "Hibernate" in advanced settings either.
Maybe these two problems are cause by the same faulty power saving measures, or maybe they are entirely unrelated.

Edit : i have used AMD's auto-detect tool to reinstall the latest AMD driver (integrated GPU) and updatded the NVIDIA Driver (Dedicated GPU) but it didn't solve anything .

Hey KHGT, have you tried the CMD and typing powercfg -h off to see if that would stop putting your Computer into Sleep mode?
Also you can try these methods: How to disable and re-enable hibernation - Windows Client

Please post the response to this command
PowerCfg -a
Nothing useful can be said until those results are known.

All the best,

Heres the result :

The following sleep states are available on this system:
Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) Network Connected
Hibernate

The following sleep states are unavailable on this system:
S1
S2
S3
Hybrid Sleep
Fast Startup (I disabled it myself when setting up the computer)

Will try disabling hibernation with powercfg -h off now, but then again i dont know if this is related to the desktop icon problem.

Then you have S0 Modern standby.
Your computer does not sleep.
S0 Modern standby starts when your display goes off.

I suggest you re-write your post #69.

Best of luck,
Denis

Thats kinda what i figured out, sadly i as i said in #69 i cant get into the *real* bios to re-enable S3 sleep so my only workaround is to leave the screen on at all times.
In any case, this clearly has nothing to do with our desktop icons problem so i will stop mentioning it. Thanks for your help.

I do not know what you mean by "real" bios.

The only way I know of disabling S0 Modern standby is
Disable Modern Standby in Windows 10 and Windows 11 - ElevenForumTutorials
apart from a tool that applies just to some Ryzen CPU Bioses together with a procedure that edits it.
- Many users have found that disabling S0 enables S3 Sleep. I didn't, I now only have on, hibernate, off but it's better than having S0 messing things up.

Before I disabled S0, I did spend some time using a sort of halfway house workaround :-
- Power options - Turn off the display - Never
- Screensaver - Set to turn on after 1 minute [or whatever you want]. Blanks screensaver chosen so the display looks off even though it's not - C:\Windows\System32\scrnsave.scr
This setup stops S0 Modern standby ever starting.

All the best,
Denis

What i mean by "real bios" is the fact that these lenovo laptops only give you access to a very limited BIOS with some basic options, none of the power-related options can be accessed by the user, editing them requires either flashing a custom bios or the use of a tool (UMAF GitHub - DavidS95/Smokeless_UMAF) to actually enable S3 support in the BIOS but that doesnt work with every model since not all OEM include S3 support in the first place.

I will simply use your screensaver method i guess.
