VirtualBox v7 - snapshots not working after saving

Windows 11 Pro 25H2 (RP channel)
Windows 11 host and Guest. Running VBox 6.1.40 all is fine - saving snapshots then restarting the VMs will load up quickly. With v7 the snapshots will save but always fail with an error then abort.

Vbox 7.0.2 latest build, Extension pack installed and 7.0.2 Guest additions installed on the VM.

Re-installing v6.1.40, snapshots working again, even ones saved with v7.0.2. 🤔

I'd suggest sticking with the VirtualBox 6.1.x series until 7.0.x settles down (maybe by 7.0.10) unless you have a second PC you can use just for testing updates. The 6.1.x series will continue to be updated/supported until late 2023, so no rush, unless you really need some of the new features.

Yes that's the plan. I like the new v7 interface with dark mode but it has a lot of problems. Others have reported the snapshot issue on the Oracle forum

As you have Pro, and you are running Windows 11 as a guest, why not user Hyper-V - it is so superior in performance to Virtualbox for Windows guests (not Home though as that cannot run in enhanced mode). Virtualbox is generally better for non Windows OSs to be fair.

I have a virtual machine of all latest Insider versions, and as they are stored in .vhdx format, you can add a boot entry and native boot them as well.

Well, it is your choice but personally I find the performance difference quite significant that it is no contest which to use for Windows Guests (except Home guests).

I never was able to get any audio in hyperV OSs (Ubuntu-Arch and other distros)
I liked the performance, but audio was a must, so I switched to VMware.
Slower yes but audible.

You can get sound but it is tricky. Actually Kali Linux is easy for that. The problem I had was the lag between audio and visual on streaming apps.

Installing Kali Linux in Hyper-V in enhanced mode AND sound

I have previously shown how to install Ubuntu in Hyper-V enhanced mode but I was googling how to do it for other distros, and came across how to do it for Kali Linux I could not believe how simple it was compared to setting up Ubuntu. Basically one command in step 3 does all the hard work...

They might get it right one day. I know that VM uses a different type of hypervisor but come on MS, it is your OS,
if VMware can...

Easier said than done.

You have to understand the difference between type 1 hypervisors and type 2. They work very differently.

In simple terms type 2 hypervisors sit on top of windows and use emulated drivers which map to pcs hardware through the windows layer.
This makes them easier to use and more non Windows OS friendly but that comes with a performance penalty.

Type 1 vms sit right on top of hypervisor and interface more directly with the hardware, and do not directly interact with Windows .

This puts onus on guest OS to enable its drivers to talk to pc hardware more directly like Windows vms can.

Of course, the main reason to use type 1 Hypervisors is superior performance.

So it is not really the type 1 hypervisor that is the issue but the guest OSs are not properly set up to use the type 1 hypervisors. Kali Linux is best implementation I have seen.

Thank you. So Kali has sound in HyperV?
I have dealt with so many distros and I settled on Xero but I am willing to give Kali a try.
I will follow the instructions you have posted and let you know!
I doubt I will like it as much as Xero though.
