Solved VLC Media Player is slow to start these days, anyone else?


Just downloaded it a minute ago VLC media player 3.0.21 Portable Windows 64-bit 74MB Win64 Portable

VLC media player is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as Blu-ray, DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols.

Starts up instantly (but it's on a ram disk).
Video from the Internet is slow (from a regular server, not a CDN server, may need to be adjusted).
Remove it.

backup %appdata%\vlc

then after reinstall, just launch it once, then overwrite %appdata%\vlc with your backup and all your configs will be back

Is there an update for libaacs.dll, maybe?

Or maybe MS just hates BluRay? :D



One thing I always do when I'm going to reinstall something that has a bunch of "settings"... is to just take a few screenshots of the settings I use.

VLC's bluray compatibility is mediocre at best. Cyberlink PowerDVD is much better/ more smooth

hmm I didn't like PowerDVD it lacked the features I liked about VLC.
and Power DVD cost a lot of $ too..
and with VLC I can stop and resume from where I left off... for media files but not with discs.

I bought PowerDVD 17 back in 2018.. didn't like it

If it were me, I'd just take a few screenies of your settings, on make notes in a text file, then reinstall the program. That's pretty much the first step when you start to have problems.

lol... the only issue I am having is cold startup time..
once going playback is fine.

never tried with a disc. but you can use this older dll extension to enable it under control interfaces too and see if that will work for discs

sadly that plugin has not been updated for VLC v3 as far as I could read on it on that page.

If I ever use it, I don’t have a problem with the app loading but I do find it slow these days when loading most MKV files

Not at all, quite the opposite. I clicked on it and it was literally instant.
That being said, I'm still running Windows 11 Pro 23H2 VLC 3.0.20 Vetinari

P.S. FWIW, I just tried a 4K 2.31GB .mp4 file and it launched right away in VLC as well.
