Voice Typing problem with punctuation

I'm using "voice typing" for dictation (Win + H) but no matter what I try I just cannot get voice typing to type the word "period".

Every time I say something like "... within the agreed time period" it types: within the agreed time.

The word period always gets replaced with a dot (which is particularly annoying seeing as nobody here in the UK ever uses the term "period" to mean the dot at the end of a sentence).

My OS language settings are set to English (United Kingdom) and I have tried spelling out the word, but all it does is type out each letter with a space between them and then deletes the entire word and still replaces it with a dot (even though the word "period" was never actually said).

Is there any way that I can work around this annoyance? So far everything that I have tried has failed.

Hi, welcome, Moutya.

I believe you have to say “Literal Word Period”?

Insert the literal word (for example, insert the word "period" instead of the punctuation mark) Say:Literal word

I believe you can now also activate Auto Punctuation for ending a sentence etc, activate it then pause when you want the sentence to end. From this video, I believe it also ads a comma where it thinks it is needed, and a question mark where you ask a question.

You probably still have to say “Literal Word Period” for the literal word “Period”

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it. However, whenever I say the phrase “literal word period" it just types: literal word.

I have managed to get a slight improvement though.

Under Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region > Options there is an option for speech recognition language packs, and mine was set to the default English (United States) despite me having all other language and locale settings set to English (United Kingdom). So I added the United Kingdom speech recognition language pack and the issue with regards to typing the word "period" has improved a little. I was actually able to dictate the phrase "within the agreed time period" and it typed it out correctly. You just have to make sure that you don't pause even slightly after the word "period". This was not the case previously; the word was always converted to a dot regardless of any lack of pause. After the UK speech recognition language pack was installed, I was even able to use the word 'period' at the end of a sentence by saying "within the agreed time period full stop".

However, even the slightest pause after the word will cause it to be deleted and replaced with a dot. The same still happens when spelling the word out letter-by-letter (as it did previously) and this happens regardless of whether automatic punctuation is set to on or off. I still think that this is bizarre behaviour for an OS that is set to UK English, and even morse so when a dedicated UK English Speech Recognition language pack has been installed specifically for the purpose of implementing British speech to text. In my opinion, this shows shows incompetence / ignorance by Microsoft, or just outright indifference.

To add insult to injury, I have now discovered that saying "pound sign" does not type the words literally, nor does it type out an actual pound sign (£). Instead it types a hash symbol (#). Once again it's doing this using a UK English language pack, and despite the fact that literally nobody in the UK would ever describe a hash as a pound (we say 'hashtag' not 'poundtag', and 'press the hash key on your phone').

This reminds me of the old days of Microsoft (early 2000s) where you could get Windows in hundreds of different languages (no matter how obscure or rare) all except for British English. Microsoft decided that the UK would not have its own language version of the OS, and instead it would be forced to use US English (and we'd all just have to shut up and deal with it). Sigh.
