Nord currently have 70% off so that's £26 for a 2 year subscription. Norton offers a free VPN bundled with 360 Deluxe which I have although not activated this part. Any preferences on the board?

Adding all that extra crap between you and the internet will degrade your connection.
I'm getting the vibe that you're not a fan :ROFLMAO:

No, why anybody would think tunneling their internet connection via some random low-rent data center is a good idea is totally beyond me!!!

I completely agree. I used a well-known vpn for about a second before I realized how much my speed degraded. What is the purpose unless one has something to hide in their internet use.

My work insist on using a VPN if I'm working from home, if fact I can't log on to half the systems without one

Doesn't a VPN offer extra security when using public Wi-Fi access?
Using a VPN is like anything else in the computer world. One has to make a decision on their own specific needs, requirements, and situations. IMO a basic computer user shoots themselves in the foot both with the cost and the sacrifice with what they are giving up when a VPN is used. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is a better security option than good computing practices. Not using public wifi is only one of such practices. Everyone bites at all the so called "security measures" that are thrown around and sold. Folks pay for this and pay for that without a clue, when, for the average user, they themselves are their own best security practice. At some point, paranoia about security takes over.

There are times that some people have no choice but to use public Wi-Fi. A VPN can also come in handy to watch content that is blocked in certain areas. I do agree that most users when at home doesn't need to use a VPN.

If you only need a VPN for public WiFi and not interested in watching blocked contents then maybe the free Cloudfare Warp might be good enough.

My work insist on using a VPN if I'm working from home, if fact I can't log on to half the systems without one
Correct, but that's a VPN that your company runs for you that you use to encrypt your traffic between your home and them. That's a completely different thing.

No, why anybody would think tunneling their internet connection via some random low-rent data center is a good idea is totally beyond me!!!
Yeah, we are in agreement, I've never once said, "boy I wish that I had a random VPN for accessing the internet".

The only logical reason for me would be if I was trying to access some type of content that was locked down to a particular geographical location. But I don't have to do that.

As far as public wifi goes, I never use them on my computer. I use my hotspot on my cell phone.

Here is the scenario:
- you are traveling outside of your country
- roaming charges for using your phone as a hot spot are outrageous
- the hotel offers WiFi (consider this public WiFi that is limited to guests).
Do you just make sure that your Network settings are configured for Public and perform your normal online activities? Or should you use a VPN as well? Or just stay away from the internet wile away?
