W11 - Computer turns on after shutdown

Still have issue posted on here i can't figure it out, but feel might have fixed it without knowing and that bothers me a bit not knowing.
Freezes then restarts nvlddmkm.sys

Ahhh, I tend to not post too much in the BSOD section because the established methodology for testing is so damned good, and the information provided from the testing almost always yields results. Your issue with the nvlddmkm FCing and restarting I *think* may have happened to me for a bit, either with my 970 on my current rig, or else when I first got my 3080 Ti, don't remember which - but it was resolved so quickly I never got a chance to really dig into it. Something was breaking somewhere, it may not have been that system file, but I want to say it was.

And agreed 100% again - the worst ones are the ones that get fixed and you're not really sure what you did (or if anything you did was relevant) in the issue getting fixed. I suspect we're a lot alike in that respect - we'd rather know for a fact what the error and fix are, so we can be armed with the knowledge to help someone else at a later date.

@glasskuter I almost always use the power menu to initiate the shutdown. I've also used the command prompt (shutdown /s) to do so during my troubleshooting process which didn't stop the issue.

@Winuser I've actually done that when I was taking SSDs out one by one to test if they were the problem source/CMOS clearing etc. The PC turned on as soon as the power cable was connected (with the PSU switch on) to the power strip, so I think it might be the new PSU's fault (or maybe GPU's). Hopefully, I can check the PSU when my PSU tester arrives during the weekend.

Things I haven't tested thus far: 1. testing whether the 4090 hardware is at fault (ie trying to start it w/o that) or 2. running the 4090 with my previous PSU (EVGA 750w).

The weirdest thing is everything works fine inside the OS and operates 100% normally (intensive gaming, watching media, etc.). No issues beyond the restart right after shutdown. I had some issues with the Sleep function, but I turned off my Ethernet Controller (3) I225V wake in power mgmt, and it was fine.

It sure does seem like the GPU might be related to the fault, since all the other testing has yielded no results. But, it could still be just a software issue, and Windows has a bad key or setting somewhere, which you'll be closer to suspecting if this current round of testing with the 4090 does not bear fruit.

As for the Ethernet wake - you mean you disabled Wake on LAN? And that leads to a whole different rabbit hole - but really easy to test.

Boot the computer, do what you need to, then disconnect from all wired and wireless network connections (pull the Ethernet cable out, make sure Wi-Fi is disabled) then try to shut down. This might actually be a good idea to do before you go down the extensive 4090 testing that you have planned, as a WoL feature may be marked as disabled but may still, in fact, be enabled, and that is exactly why it is happening. I completely forgot about this possibility, too.

Thanks for input ! Never really had much input on this post. May have been either been driver issue or PSU otherwise not sure because my problem hasn't happened in quite some time.

t sure does seem like the GPU might be related to the fault, since all the other testing has yielded no results.
Thought it was my GPU with my restart issue because it was new also i tested GPU with heavy stress test and gaming there was no issues.
Not feeling this is issue. Yes it can be a hardware issue ! Only way is trying different card or onboard graphics.

Mentioned some things to try here.

I just went through all my network adapters (I122-V and WifiAX2000 160MHz) and shut off everything re wake on (magic packet; magic packet from s5; pattern match). I did a restart without the ethernet and no dice, still restarts. For peripherals, I did the same last time so I can at least rule ethernet + USBs out.

I don't know if Aorus Z690 pro DDR5 has a WOL feature in bios (I read on Reddit that it is enabled by default and controlled via network adapters in the device manager but unsure) but I have been looking into ErP setting and wonder if I should try that too.

If ErP is enabled, try disabling it, won't hurt, and is still a faster test than replacing PSU / GPU lol.

I have the same issue on my secondary system (ASRock Z97 Extreme6 and i7-4790k) for god knows how long. Tried everything. It stops and then comes back. Tried to disable and delete I could from task scheduler, messed around with device settings and whatever I found on the internet.
It usually happens around midnight that's why I kept pounding on task scheduler. There is probably one update that keeps enabling the task and turns on my PC but I just can't pin point what app is it. I don't want to waste my time on it anymore so my ultimate solution was to plug in the PC to a smart plug that cuts down the power at midnight. I just ask google or alexa to turn the power on when I need to use the PC. Since it is just a secondary PC, it is fine. But one time I was using it late at night and the power just cut off. Good thing I was just browsing the web on it. Haha.

Tried everything. It stops and then comes back.

That's what worries me too. On my current rig, it inexplicably started doing this. Then, just as inexplicably, a few months later, it stopped turning back on and stayed off after a shutdown command.

Currently, it actually shuts down like it is supposed to.

Sorry, I haven't been posting many updates bc I've been bogged down via work, so I just kept the PC on sleep for a while and avoided troubleshooting.

Update:

1. Ever since I've been using sleep, I've noticed that sometimes, on wake, the explorer.exe bar is just gone and a restart usually fixes it - unsure if this is indicative of anything big?

2. My displays have also been restarting (hang, cursor slows to crawl, then black out and restarts) while I'm on desktop multi-tasking (youtube, stream watching [discord/twitch] + chrome usage). The display issues do not happen while I am in-game on intensive settings, so I am suspecting some power spike btwn PSU -- GPU here possibly.
- I replaced drivers on the 4090 and thought it fixed the issue, but it kept reappearing.
-- in the event viewer log, I see nvidia OpenGL driver (2) running out of memory followed by dwm.exe error (hence the PC hanging), along with a bunch of nvlddmkm errors prior (14, 0s, then 4101 for recovery of displays).
- I have temporarily replaced my 4090 with my old 3070 to see if that is the case. If it still happens, I'm thinking either it's the Thermaltake psu, although I was also suspecting the Thermaltake gf3 1000w 450w rated 12vhpwr cable (which would allow the TT psu to be read as perfect via a psu reader but still present issues I would think).

So far, I plan to keep using the 3070 with the Thermaltake to see if it's either GPU or PSU. My shutdown issue persists with the 3070.

Anyways, happy holidays + new year!

Yes, I turned it on/off a few times during last month's troubleshooting, and it did not fix the shutdown issue.

Okay read through post didn’t remember seeing that in there maybe i missed it.
Let me get this right, still happened without 4090 even in exchange with 3070 and still happened with different PSU. ?

When this problem occurs do you ever go into Event Viewer and see what errors or warnings occurred at exact time issue happened ? Maybe can lead you in better direction. And why don’t you for hell of it try sfc /scannow.

Otherwise i somehow feel if nothing above helps may have to consider a reset of Windows 11 or Clean install.
You have tried so much with no resolution yet.

Have you tried the shutdown command with the /f switch which force stops all running apps?

I've just had the same thing happen; added a second SSD to my PC and it would turn on (very quickly) after shutdown.
I'm also using a Z690 motherboard (MSI). Both SSDs are NVME.

I fixed it by disabling fast startup.
