W 11 Pro Version 25H2
O.k So I have just downloaded my W11 operating systems to a usb flash drive, with a view to installing it on another machine, at a later date.......all went well, but I am a little concerned that my system is activated by a W7 license......I'm told that you can no longer activate W11 with such a license key.....is that correct ?......

IF it IS a W7 activation key, is there any danger of Microsoft "pulling the plug" at some point ?.......

You can't use the Windows 7 key to activate Windows 11, so there are no worries about what Microsoft will do.

I just wondered about systems that were activated BEFORE the cut off point ?........ShowKeyPlus says "Default Key Requires a Digital License for Activation"........

The system of the machine you used to make the usb drive is irrelevant. The only thing that determines if Windows 10 will activate will be the machine it is installed on. If that is a Win7 or Win8 machine that had ever been upgraded to Win10 while it was still free, then it will have a digital licence for windows 10 (which is also valid for Windows 11) linked to the PC's unique hardware ID and stored on Microsoft's activation servers. Once a PC has a digital licence it can never be revoked, even if was restored back to its original W7/8 OS. A clean install will activated from the existing digital licence as soon as it can contact the activation servers.

If the W7/8 PC had never been upgraded, then it's too late now to get a digital licence. You can still upgrade it (to W10) or clean install Windows 10/11, but you'll need to buy a new key to activate it.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

If it's activated it will have a digital licence. This will be shown in Settings > Update & Security > Activation (in Win10) or Settings > System > Activation (Win11). Once a PC has a digital licence linked to its hardware ID it cannot be removed.

if you need a copy of the product key on the system you are using.
open the registry and browse to ..
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

the product key for that system is there and you can copy it down for future reference.

Thanks for that.....just got to find a W10 machine, that has the right specs. to run W11, and all should be good !!

If by 'right specs' you mean one that meets all the official W11 requirements (supported processor, TPM 2.0, etc..) then they first appeared around 2017, and were becoming common by 2020. One example is my System One.

If you just mean an unsupported device that can be made to run W11 with a workaround, then a 1st gen Intel processor is sufficient (or an equivalent AMD). My System Two dates from 2010, has a 1st gen i5, and has been running W11 since first release. It is now on 24H2 (multi-booting with Insider builds up to Canary).

If your system has been activated via a digital licence, then what's in this registry entry is just the generic Windows key.

That is true, even if your system has been activated with a full key. It will always be a generic key of some sort.

I have one system that has an OEM W10 Pro key embedded in the bios. That is the key that was used to activate it's clean install of Windows 11, and it is shown as the installed key by ShowKeyPlus. That SoftwareProtectionPlatform registry key contains the 'Windows 10 Pro Default Product Key to be used with OEM Activation 3.0 - for manufacturers'.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds as native boot vhdx.
