Never seen this happen before. When I started my laptop today it had already downloaded an update and was requesting to "Restart". So I hit "Restart", the computer proceeded to install the update, then failed to restart. Said something went wrong with the restart. It suggested I try restarting again which still failed. There was no hint as to what went wrong. I'm on a 2nd computer right now, the affected computer is totally unable to start.
The update involved was just last night or this morning, is it possible the update did the damage? Has anyone else had this problem from this update?
I couldn't do anything with it at all so I took it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. What the heck happened?

Welcome to the forums. Sorry to hear this. I don't know what caused the problem, but I had no issues with my system update this morning (see specs.) and have never had this issue happen with any Windows Update (W95, W7, W10, or W11). This is a classic example for having system image backups. FWIW, I have 2 1 TB USB backup drives for system images. Each can hold three images, so I alternate drives when backing up after an update proves it's working right. I also have a 1 TB drive for incremental data backups that gives me five increments. I run a data backup after the weekly full system AV scan. I bet the cost of the backup drives will be less than what the GS will charge. I also pause WU until after the next CU update to see if there are major issues with it and then resume WU so I can watch the downloads. Macrium Reflect to the rescue.

is it possible the update did the damage?
With windows all things are possible. In this case it was too much a coincidence so it may have. It's too late now to prove the update caused the problem, but you could have gone into recovery and uninstalled the update. File corruption can always happen. It's for cases like this that having a system backup comes in really handy.

Did you try pressing the F8 key will it's booting? Any error messages? Any lights on or does it just shut off or what?

What I'm saying is, does that computer sleep for a period of time, which means the problem may have only become evident in the reboot.

What you said about the file corruption is probably the case, that's what the guy from Geek Squad said. And I totally agree with your advice about having a a system backup. Back when I had W7, W7 had a built-in system for making system images and I used to use that system. Never quite figured out how to do it after we lost W7. I know Macrium Reflect has imaging software but I never tried imaging after losing it in W7.
Fortunately I won't lose any files, I do keep backups of all my files. That doesn't fix the computer of course, but it does save all my files.
If I find out for sure what went wrong I'll definitely post what it was, and thank you all for trying to help.

Last time I used the computer was the night before the problem arose. When I started back up it asked for a restart for the update. So it would appear that the problem only became evident in the reboot like you said.

That's the point I was trying to make. Sometimes problems only become evident in a reboot.
These days when computers sleep rather than shutting down, you don't become aware of a problem until then.

Here is my own example. This was a hardware issue this time, but it could have been a malware issue on another occasion, although much less likely these days.

If you have no success in fixing it manually, then I would suggest making an image restore.

I was totally unaware of a system image option still available in Windows. Just went looking and son-of-a-gun I found it! But MS recommends using 3rd party software?
Wonder why that is. When I used it back in W7 it always seemed to work great. For some reason I thought windows dumped that system imaging software after W7. Hmmm. Thank you very much for pointing that out!
Not only that but maybe I'll take another look at the Macrium Reflect software, but the last time I looked at it, which has been several years ago, I didn't quite understand the whole thing so I stuck with the Windows version.
Hey thanks again for the heads up Scott.

Geek Squad still has it. It never showed the screen you're showing, but I didn't try the F8 either. As I recall it did offer to run a diagnostic program but to no avail. I tried it but no joy. It also offered to try some kind of system repair but it was unsuccessful as well. Other than that there was nothing else offered like the window you're showing, no safe mode, etc. I did try the few options it offered but nothing worked and only led me back to the same window again.

When is the last time that computer successfully rebooted prior to the Windows Update?
What I'm saying is, does that computer sleep for a period of time, which means the problem may have only become evident in the reboot.
Ah, I see what you're saying.......No, it doesn't sleep, I shut it down at night.

I seem to recall that the W7 system image function was being decontented (no longer supported?) by MS and even though it was still available in W10 & W11, MS was advising users to go to a third party package. I took this as a threat that W7 system image might not work as it used to some day. I went to MR and quit using the W7 software.

Yeah Jamis I thought that system image had been eliminated beyond W7. I finally gave up my W7 for W10. Now I wish I'd kept 10. LOL

Finally got my laptop back, they said it looked like it was file corruption most likely from the update. I do believe I'm going to try going with a system image this time. Thanks all for the advice. (y)
