Agreed. Methinks this is one way they might redeem themselves in the domestic market. Corporations tend to forget that without we, the plebs, their colossal data beasts are merely a huge exercise in futility. That said there could be forces even more sinister at work here. USA and China aren't exactly friends when it comes to silicon. Samsung is practically running a monopoly because up until now Micron was very much into doing their own thing. What could be affecting the price of RAM might easily be political as much as it is economic. We are living in troubled times and economic warfare is hardly fictitious. I'm not making any excuses for these price gougers. When the planet is in economic upheaval the first thing to look at is how commodities are being dealt with. Call me a conspiracy theorist but system memory is indeed a commodity.

Sure. Maybe by a whole 10%. Only way prices are going to drop significantly is if 90% of the domestic market refuses to purchase system memory at such outrageous prices. Meanwhile, the prebuild industries such as DELL, HP, ACER, ASUS, etc. will still be buying up memory because they know people will be gullible enough to buy their ready-made products that they put together with their wholesale stock which, they too will have to pay more money for; but not nearly as much as the end user. The people who are really going to pay through the nose are the DIY PC builders like myself. Personally, I could give a rat's behind to the AI industry behind this because my time in this regard is done. I already know that the issue is as political as it is economic. I'm quite certain the military knows it too. The genie is out of the bottle and there is no putting it back. The golden age of affordable system memory is over.

There are so many reasons for this: One is that big industry doesn't really want you building your own PC(s). Two is that we are entering a new era called AI. Three is that big industry wants you to use their CLOUD services instead of you owning your own cloud. Sadly, another reason is because Microsoft. Perhaps I should just leave it at that. Because Microsoft is a good answer for many things and, in many cases, this is frequently a fairly accurate answer. Here are some examples: Why did my PC break. A: Because Microsoft. Why can't I install Windows on my PC? A: Because Microsoft. Why do I have to use TPM? A: Because Microsoft. Why is it so hard to keep AI off my computer? A: Because Microsoft. etc.

Oh, it is a good generic answer alright but it isn't the only answer and the bigger answer is the Consortium group that I used to yabber on and on about like a tin foil hat donning idiot, knowing full-well that Microsoft was and is part of that Consortium. Because folks, there really was a conspiracy and if you do the research you can still find it but you have to dig deep. TPM was a big part of this. TPM was their brain child. There were over 200 names on that list of conspirators to bring TPM2 to fruition. This is NOT fiction. The Consortium also knew that once they put this puppy in place system memory costs would go through the roof. Our tech was being prepared for AI.

Everyone and their dog knows that AI is the primary reason behind this push and that, my friends, is the real reason your hardware, not just system memory, is going to be horrendously expensive. Trust me when I say system memory won't be the only thing skyrocketing. The reality is that if it needs silicon you are gonna pay through the nose for it. I remember when GFX cards were so expensive for the domestic end user the buyer was better off buying a prebuild and removing the graphics card and selling the rest for parts. . . Brand new parts. Well, those days are gone too because graphics cards need silicon too. I don't see the cost of CPUs dropping any time soon either. So here is how we will continue to lose:

1) Keep using AI
2) Keep buying system memory
3) Make sure all your PCs have TPM2
4) Always purchase software that is compatible with AI and TPM2
5) Keep on buying new tech. The newer the better.
6) Make sure if you have a Windows operating system that you have it linked to a Microsoft account.
7) Use cloud services. Use One Drive.

@Scannerman People I respect, economists and tech industry watchers, many of them are concerned about way too much money going into AI datacenters. If AI doesn't make money soon for many of these companies, they will default on their debt and shut down. That's what happens when there is a bubble.

Call it what you will. The housing bubble didn't pop. No, it merely deflated a little. Homes still cost way more than they used to. We aren't going to see any significant decreases in system RAM even when these companies you speak of default. Those prices we paid for D RAM in the spring are long gone. Likely gone forever. The only thing I can see that could change this is a massive economic depression. AI is here to stay. I truly wish it were otherwise but I rather doubt it. These Big League players like Micron and Samsung aren't going to default on anything. It's always the little guys who get crushed in the end. Too big to fail will always get the bail. Meanwhile AI is getting rammed down our throats (no pun intended) at every turn, every step of the way, whether we, the plebs, want it or not. The big wheels are in motion and there is no stopping them apart from wholesale catastrophe. I sincerely wish I were wrong. Time will tell.
