Not. Samsung Rejects Rumor of Consumer SSD Market Exit

I would have a hard time imagining Samsung doing this since they practically own the entire domestic market now.

I don't know precisely what % of the SSD market Hynix has in North America but it sure doesn't rival Samsung.

Here's what I see happening:

The Samsung silicon monopoly resulting in outrageously astronomical prices, extremely expensive silicon storage, extremely expensive memory, and very very expensive computers. Over time we all may hear a tiny leetle "popping" sound when the master decides to 'throw the dog a bone' BUT don't expect to see those 2024 prices come back because they won't. Samsung has become the master of the market by default. Eventually we can expect to see lower grade silicon being doled out to us at above 2024 prices. This is a no brainer. Even used RAM costs more now than it did brand new. Enthusiasts will have to settle for memory without the fancy features like XMP and EXPO or, pay through the nose for what they can get their hands on.

There is a slight chance that this prediction will not come to pass. This all depends on what those new silicon factories planned for construction in USA will be manufacturing; but for what we have been witnessing over time with how computing is being managed I rather doubt it. Instead, our PCs are gradually being transformed back into word processors, gaming terminals, and smart TVs. Compute power will be executed over what we can access via internet and not so much by what is in our little black boxes. Call it a paradigm shift if you will. I believe we are witnessing the end of an era.

Or in China. Of course, who knows about quality and if 8 GB RAM is sold as 64GB RAM. (like with thumb drives.)

China has enough industry to tend to its own. They don't nearly have the advanced technology that Micron and Samsung has but they're getting there. Reverse engineering is a thing of course. Shadier outfits will continue to sell their bogus silicon to the west for as long as gullible people keep buying it. China will likely attempt to do the same thing USA did : Keep the very best for themselves. It's an old game and it's full of holes. Tariffs on China won't make it feasible to benefit much from buying Chinese RAM in the Americas, but the inkling of hope is in the hands of those who actually produce DRAM in USA. Time will tell and I'm not holding my breath. The big money is in making RAM for AI.

Yes. Bearing in mind that I am Canadian it is my understanding that Donald Trump has made manufacturing of silicon chips in USA very attractive. In so doing these companies will bypass the tariffs. Reports that TSMC plans to build a number of these facilities in the USA holds a glimmer of encouragement although I cannot say with any degree of assurance that they will be producing DRAM for the domestic end user. If they endeavour to do so they could potentially secure a large portion of this market giving Samsung some formidable competition. Of course this is only speculation and that is why I refer to it as a glimmer of hope. Regardless of whether this happens or doesn't the days of buying RAM at 2024 prices are over. I'm glad I got my 128 GB of Samsung B Die when I did. Back in the day it cost me 1400 dollars on a Boxing Day special. The same RAM can now fetch 6K used.

As of 2025, ASML Holding is the only company that produces and sells EUV systems for chip production.
Trump needs to take over the Netherlands. If he knows where it is.

I happen to like G. Skill DRAM. I have to appreciate that they are at least acknowledging our pain and not simply gouging our eyes out.

I originally heard that claim on the "Moore's Law is Dead" Youtube channel. He has since updated with his belief that his information is more than likely true. Tom seems to feel his "sources" are dependable. So I guess time will tell.

it takes several years to build new production sites.. so until then, the gouging will continue

My wife's Sabertooth build (which is currently in pieces because I'm giving it an upgrade and complete overhaul). has been using G. Skill RAM for well over a decade now. The RAM in her unit is easy to over clock and latency is awesome. Not sure if it's B-die or not but sure behaves like it. I'll be keeping this factory matched set in her unit in the rebuild. Sure will be missing those good old days.
