Solved WD Blue SN580 SSD and PiBOX enclosure

Per discussion on thread "SSD's lower prices When?" I purchased a WD Blue SN580 SSD and its PiBOX enclosure and attempted to format the drive. I bought this NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) technology to have a fast outboard (external) drive to use expressedly for Imaging my computers.

After installing the SSD into its PiBOX I followed the directions to format the drive.

accepting the default option on the Initialize Disk window it presented.

I expected the drive to mount in the following window

but it didn't.
An astute member of the forum directed me to the device manager where (presto!) it appeared!! presenting me with information about driver problems that I wasn't expecting (none of this was predicted in the information that came with the drive or its enclosure)

Now I'm about to [Update Driver]...

SES (SCSI Enclosure Services) is used to get external drive volume info, turn on password protection and LED controls.

Current WD SES Drivers

Current WD SES Drivers are not available for download from Western Digital.
They are only available through Windows or macOS updates, WD Discovery, WD Drive Utilities, and WD Security Software.

That only applies to the Legacy SES driver. It does not apply to the Current SES driver. As the important warning clearly states, the Legacy driver should not be installed on Windows 10 or higher.

Disk 6 however could be a candidate...

Well the WD Blue SN580 isn't supported by WD Discovery nor by WD Drive Utilities nor by WD Security Software (according to the official documentation of these 3). So, Windows Update appears to be the only available method to get the Current SES driver for it. If you click on the link below, it takes a few seconds before it expands the section that shows how this update should look like:

Maybe the reason why it doesn't show up in Windows Update is because it was built on Windows NT (Not There). lol

In all seriousness, though, the link I gave in my previous reply does state that the SES driver is not required for Windows to recognize the drive (i.e., to recognize the SSD). Still, it didn't hurt to check...

Personally, I, would find it a wee bit annoying that a yellow bang warning triangle stays visible in Device Manager due a missing device driver. And besides, checking in Device Manager after installing new hardware to look for potential errors is, and always has been, 150% solid advice. But anyway. The important thing is that the SSD works. (Even, if getting the SES features up and running would've been a nice bonus IMO.)

That being said, I suggest to download and install WD Dashboard and use that to (just in case) verify that the latest firmware has already been installed in the SSD.

Right-click on it, choose Properties. It should tell you at the top on the General tab.

That's just how This PC is divided into different groups each one of which can be expanded/collapsed.

P.S., once you have verified that Disk 6 is the new WD Blue SN580 SSD, right-click on the unallocated space on this Disk and create a simple volume (partition), format it as NTFS, and assign it a drive letter. (Assigning a drive letter to it should make it show up under Devices and drives in This PC.)

You're right!! I bring up Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management and up appears Disk 6. Unplug the drive (from the USB port) and away goes Disk 6.

Before I go any further...['ve noticed that no one seems to have been phased by

(i.e., no nastiness from ... telling me I failed to unplug all my USB devices). I was surprised it wasn't going away, even though I did unplug the drive it referred to, the drive containing all of my Macrium material pertaining to this W11 computer ( I didn't notice it on my other W10 imaged drives, but I'll have to look more carefully). Why does Macrium create this (phantom? when the drive it refers to isn't connected??) disk-partition-like item?

So now I am formatting it as NTFS...

Tomorrow I'll image this computer, , add relevant .pst files to it, create appropriate Outlook profiles to those two computers and then image them onto it.

lmao.. I suppose it's just the PCIe-to-USB adapter board [that is inside the PiBOX] being manufactured by Seagate. Which PiBOX did you get BTW? From what I can see on Amazon, there's the M2-312-NE model with JMicron JMS583 chip, the M2-322-NE model with Realtek RTL9210 chip, and the M2-333-DL model with Realtek RTL9210B chip.

Separate firmware updates also exist for these chips BTW. (Separate, i.e., these specific updates have got nothing to do with the actual M.2 SSD that you have installed inside the enclosure.) For the Realtek RTL9210 and RTL9210B, currently the latest one is linked in this forum post here. (AFAIK the JMicron JMS583 chip came out 6 years ago and reportedly has had stability issues that may have been fixed with a firmware update at some point in the past, but I personally haven't checked on that.) Either way, firmware updates can sometimes help to keep it stable. You don't want to trust your data to an external storage device only to later find out that firmware stability is causing the connection to flake out sporadically while a data transfer operation is still in progress.

So, I would do some longer testing, just to be a little more on the safe side. FastCopy with the Verify option enabled can produce a detailed log file to show exactly which files it copied successfully and which ones failed. I use it not only for initial testing a newly bought drive, but also keep using it for copying large amounts of important data (e.g. backup data). Data surprises are among my least favorite type of surprises so that also is why I love FastCopy a lot.

This is suddenly getting very confusing and complicated. My first post on this forum (on the Win10 forum to be exact) was regarding RoboCopy... which at that time I was led to believe was the fastest copying method available.

After spending hours and hours of time to use programs to back up (but not Image) files regularly (and, to be truthful, seldom to never recalling that information until the advent of OneDrive) I was so relieved to find out I could invest in a program that could Image as well as Backup the material on my computers (including, unfortunately, the material ravaging my computers).

My interest in this SSD drive was purely speed and (of course) accuracy.

How do I test my drive?
Do I Image my computer and use Fast Copy, in Verify mode, to
a) checksum the computer's contents then
b) checksum the Image contents then
c) compare the checksums?
Or do I need to use Fast Copy to copy and paste everything and verify that (against what? the computer? Macrium's image of the computer?) ad infinatum, ad regressinatum?

The destination path is on a new SSD drive. I'm not trying to include what's on the SSD on the Image of the computer!
