Weird email from some gmail.com address about purchase of norton antivirus.

Hi, Yessterday, I received a weird email, thanking me for purchasing one year subscription of norton antivirus as renewal. I have never used norton antivirus at all. I do not want to enclose the photo or email as it may be a kind of knowingly sending unwanted messages. But please let me know, how email advised that i had purchased for 299 dollars and the amount has anonymously debited for the amount.
The gmail captured some genuine mail as spam, but not marked this as spam. I checked my account and glad that nothing was deducted. But , how could such things are allowed in emails by gmail , I do not know. I have seen some emails , as purchased or ready for purchase messages, but not this kind of email. If you purchase on online, you get the thanks for purchase, but not for unknown things.
I want members to share their views on such kind of unverifiable emails from some unknown gmail.com and It has Norton antivirus symbol.
I do not want to enclose the mail. I had just marked it spam and gmail to block the sender in future.

That's about all you can do with personal email accounts. This was likely a phishing email. In this case they elicit fear/panic in making you think you spend a large sum of money with some means to contact them to "verify" your personal info and/or credit card info. You might be surprised but a large number of people fall for these. Delete and block.

I’ve been receiving a number of spam emails recently to one email (ISP) concerning McAfee purchases. Some are marked as spam while others aren’t.
Email clearly has a poor quality (screen capped) copy of the genuine renewal notice, sent form a non McAfee address. I mark as spam.

It's phishing...asking you to contact them at some contact if you dispute. Sometimes the geniuses even send it to a whole list of email addresses without making them BCC :rolleyes: If you ever get one regarding an account you actually have...say Netflix, just contact Netflix via a number you already have for them, or through your Netflix login but not via the contact provided in email

The emails like that are usually hit and run. By that I mean that the sender only keeps the email address long enough to hopefully get a few responses. Once the spam emails are reported that account is going to be closed and the sender will have to open another account. When I get them I report them as spam and then delete them. I also never open them. The only emails I mark as spam or junk are the ones from companies that are real companies that I don't want to do business with.

@jraju, You also have to watch out for spam text messages. Just recently I received two text message from two different numbers that were supposed to be from the USPS saying that the post office didn't have enough info and couldn't deliver my packages. If it was true the postal service would have returned my packages to the sender. If they didn't even have my address they sure wouldn't have known my cell phone number.

Danny is right, once you sign up to a shonky website, your email gets shared or if the website or company is compromised, your email address and info sold on the dark web.

Spam emails for the purpose of fishing, quickly follow. They are everywhere and relentless.

If you weren’t able to identify this email and just know to mark it as spam, I would suggest you learn how to identify spam. Most of the time, clicking on or hovering over the senders email address will tell you.

If the senders address, in this case, doesn’t end with norton.com, then it’s 99.999999% probably a fishing email “spam”

For example, (and these are just examples) the following are safe:

norton.com
email.norton.com
sales.norton.com
news.norton.com

Are all safe as they come from Norton, but even still, you should investigate the email content properly in case they are spoofing the email domain (norton.com). Hovering your mouse over a link in the email can also help as it will show you the destination. This isn’t always 100% accurate as some redirects might be being used by Norton.


Just as examples, email addresses can be created in many different ways. The following are wrong because they do not end in norton.com :

norton.someotherdomain.com
norton.com.someotherdomain.com
pleaseclickme.nortonsales.hacker.com

Like I said, you need to learn more.

In past few years a zillion fraud emails have circulated. There is: Your Owe the IRS, Pay or go to Jail; A Beautiful Russian Girl want to marry an American - which is email posted by a Russian Man posing as a woman; I like this one: The FBI has detected pornography on your PC. If you pay this fine now $250, the case will be dropped, otherwise you are facing 20 years in prison for each violation: and the great one: I only need a few thousand dollars and the Government will release the funds of $250,000,000, of which you receive the sum of $2,000,000 for your help. The BEST PRACTICE, is do not open to read the email: Just delete. Some emails can contain harmful content, such as attachments, and when clicking on them, malware can be installed onto your computer.

Thanks all of you. I have marked them as spam , but how they could get norton emblem for their fraud is one thing that is concerning. Second, gmail fails to catch mails from some unknown gmail.com, that uses famous antivirus program renewal kind of letters as if one bought it. It is clear case of fraud email or spam email that gmail let go to inbox of individuals email.
Norton did not care about these kind of emails and took it as a promotional way of advertising it.

With the image editing software available these days... they can do anything.

I use the very old Paint Shop Pro 7.04 and even I could make a Norton or McAfee, or even a bank's letter head.

You have to quote a person, or put an @ symbol in front of their account name, to light up the notification bell (top right).

The funniest I get are also from Norton, Apple, etc just about everyday, the even funnier thing is (I know they are scams) is I have NEVER EVER used Norton or ANY Apple products!
