Yep, even my least technical students have agreed that they want to get into Windows 11!

What I would like to do is give the students basic how-to for using Windows 11. That's where you guys and gals come in . . .

Got a favorite shortcut? How do you get to an app? Adding shortcuts to the Taskbar? Any and everything you can think of will be useful for my students!

I probably won't introduce them to third party utilities such as StartAllBack or Explorer Patcher (making Windows 11 look like Windows 10) and things of that nature yet. I want them to get their feet on the ground and be familiar with Windows 11 as released first.

Thanks for any input . . . it will be much appreciated.

First thought would be taskbar settings by right clicking a blank space on it. Putting the icons on the left similar to ten possibly and how to hide/show buttons. Also 'Other system tray icons'. Just basic stuff first maybe or are they more advanced from your teachings?

Start with Start menu - pinning to Start, and pinning to Taskbar. You can pin app from start menu - all apps, or folders from File Explorer

I have Taskbar arranged to Center - find it nice to use.

I am kind of in agreement here - put all the main apps you intend to use in start menu, and pin your most used apps to taskbar.
The key reason for this is in start menu, icons are named, but on taskbar they are not, so it can get a bit confusing with lots of icons on taskbar which icon is which.

What I would like to do is give the students basic how-to for using Windows 11. That's where you guys and gals come in . . .
The first thing you'll want to check is that their PCs are supported devices. While there are workarounds to install or upgrade an unsupported PC, TBH they're probably better off sticking with Windows 10 until support ends in October 2025.

I probably won't introduce them to third party utilities such as StartAllBack or Explorer Patcher (making Windows 11 look like Windows 10) and things of that nature yet. I want them to get their feet on the ground and be familiar with Windows 11 as released first.

I'm happy to use W11 as it is, you can pin apps to Start and rearrange them just as easily as you can in W10. I'm also quite happy to switch between my W11 and W10 machines without having too much trouble adapting.

There's just one thing I really miss from W10, the ability to click and drag a file to a running app's icon on the taskbar and have its windows open so I can drop the file into it and open it. That is back in the 22H2 Insider Beta build and should make its way to the RTM release later this year. In the mean time this little app recreates that (essential for me) function.

Very useful information, @DigitalGoat. I will definitely use the "How Do I" questions from them.

I actually use Screenpresso Free for my tutorials, but it's always useful to have a secondary way for creating them.

Nope, don't want to overload them!

The first thing you'll want to check is that their PCs are supported devices. While there are workarounds to install or upgrade an unsupported PC, TBH they're probably better off sticking with Windows 10 until support ends in October 2025.

Yes, @Bree, I want them to learn to use Windows 11 as is first.

For now, I'll keep the "Drag and Drop" utility in reserve for later, along with things like StartAllBack and Explorer Patcher.

Yes, I know @Porthos, but most of them are far too advanced for my senior students. What I'm looking for are those basic gems that we all do without even thinking.

I don't know how many times I've been asked "how did you know" and/or "how did you get there".

Since our classes are only an hour and a half, we can't cover very much per class.

Thank you to everyone who has given me such great advice.

We'll start to investigate Windows 11 at the beginning . . . the Start Menu.

@Porthos: I'll look to see if there's a simple tutorial for that, but it's so basic, I'm not sure there's been one created.

And I found it. @Brink is really great at taking care of us!

For now, I'll keep the "Drag and Drop" utility in reserve for later....

Windows 11 as released wasn't fully 'finished'.

That drag-and-drop functionality has been in every version of Windows from XP up to Windows 10. When MS rewrote the Taskbar for 11 they forgot to include it. It should return with the next Feature Update towards the end of this year.

Another feature expected to return in the 22H2 Feature Update will be the ability to create groups of apps on Start.

I certainly hope so, although I've never used it, it would be something useful for my students. Of course I'll try it on myself first. :)
