Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
As a former Mac user for 3 decades, I've been rather surprised at a key difference between Windows and Mac users. Mac users are encouraged by Apple to upgrade upgrade upgrade to the definitely latest but sometimes debatably greatest. Yet most do it. Windows users, on the other hand, encourage each other to wait before upgrading and then insist on making 11 look like 10. It's a serious wow.

Microsoft is trying to transition to the Mac view of upgrading. Frequent minor upgrades that should be a no brainer.

I've been with Windows since the introduction of 10. I've tried to go with their 'flow' as much as possible except for intrusive advertizing schemes, like the current weather app that immediately displays 'news' that is really paid for ads and influencing in disguise.

I do add one killer Mac feature that should be on all PCs at this point but perhaps Windows is afraid of litigation --

And if anyone is curious, 11 is the first Windows OS I can recommend to a Mac user with a straight face.

The problem is Macs have those enviable silicon chips within them, that noticeably increase battery life over a day. So as Windows finally catches up in one regard, whoops! But that doesn't mean all people need Macs. Most don't.

@The Pool Man: I don't want my students to make Windows 11 look like Windows 10. I am merely attempting to give them the basics so they can navigate Windows 11 with ease.

Sorry, I made an OT post. So, here is a pertinent one, but that goes against what everyone else says, though.

I would leave the OS well alone, i.e. leave everything at their defaults, and not doing any personalizations, in particular.

I would focus on enjoyable apps like using email (how about the class exchanging 'hello' emails, and building email contacts of their loved ones) organizing photos (how about the class sharing photos of loved ones via email, and sharing photos of the class to loved ones) linking phone and computer (so you can use larger screen and physical keyboard) etc.

Corporations wait 3 years before upgrading, and if you want best interworking with them, you wait 3 years too.

There's that. Still I feel among the consumers its fear of the unknown. I get it, mind you. Both Window and Mac have burned customers with OS releases. But typically if you do some very simple things I find Windows to be shockingly reliable.

Going to 11 may be a test of the mental flexibility of my fellow senior citizens. (I'm 67, almost 68.)

I didn't find the transition especially painful. That may be because I never had a well-established "workflow" that the changes might have affected.

Corporations wait 3 years before upgrading, and if you want best interworking with them, you wait 3 years too.
Corporations are conservative to point of being ridiculous. Wait 1 year maybe but 3! I have engineering software that I need to update to latest version but cannot as our stupid IT dept is using 4 yr old OS.

They will not even let me have a standalone non networked pc as that is against the rules (which are always formulated by IT dept in first place).

These guys make a career out of saying they are undergoing stringent IT checks.

The truth is much simpler - it costs money to upgrade, and companies refuse to invest enough money. So we always end up with a lowest common denominator solution.

Hell, my company laptop is over 5 years old and ok for adding 2+2 but not much else.

Also, these guys would have to work for a living. I hate IT depts with a passion - full of jobsworths - "more than my job worths".

Personally, I would sack the lot of the senior IT management, and remind the new incumbents, they only have a job because of the end users who bring in the revenue.

Depending on how many apps they use I'm surprised nobody has suggested "send to desktop" -> create short cut and have icons on the desktop of their most popular apps. You'd have to go over it with them on how to do it but if these are pensioners who have used various versions of windows they probably are all used to clicking desktop icons. Not only that they can name the icons anything they like which might help "older frail memories".

Hi there
I like your saying -- but I often saw in US bars -- "In God we Trust -- Everybody else pays cash" (In the days before cards and phones were not common for payments of smallish amounts).

Thank you to everyone who has given me such great advice.

We'll start to investigate Windows 11 at the beginning . . . the Start Menu.

@Porthos: I'll look to see if there's a simple tutorial for that, but it's so basic, I'm not sure there's been one created.

And I found it. @Brink is really great at taking care of us!

I'm up for creating tutorials for basic things. Please let me know anything you all would like to have a tutorial on. :-)

But did they highlight the Any key? ;-)

I'm probably 75% of the population that uses my laptop for email, FB, certain bookmarks, [elementary, HS, college studies/instructions], research, photos, documents......etc., and WIN upgrades are not that necessary. You might upgrade to an i3, i5, or i7, but your internet connection may only be 25Mbps at the very most, for those 75% users.

I have been a pc home and work user since 1992 for basic operations and have had the $$ to upgrade my main laptop, when I felt like it. My previous Asus 15 lasted 4 years with HD failure, then the current DELL Custom Inspiron with HD failure after 3-1/2 years. So, I spent $$ for a recent HP Pravilion, custom built, with WIN 11, which really has no advantage over 10, for the 75% average consumer. Then to have a PC that is NOT upgradeable to 11, if you so desire. This surely keeps the PC manufactures in business......long story short. Then lose MS WIN support after a certain time period.

I feel for the population that is less fortunate, with no computer or internet. Then having school work via PC and the slowest possible internet service.

I'm up for creating tutorials for basic things. Please let me know anything you all would like to have a tutorial on. :)
@Brink

And now I think I will take you up on your kind offer; just have to figure out what I need. :) brb

OK, I'm ba-a-ack! I forgot the name of "Virtual Box" and had to look it up on a prior post. Sigh . . . Need some Prevagen or Neuriva! Now, down to business . . .

Project: Add Virtual Box to our Home version of Windows 11, latest update. Then restore our Macrium Free backup to it to be sure it will work.

Action: Create the simplest tutorial option that will get the job done.

Reasoning: Since most of our laptops have Windows 11 Home rather than Pro on them, we can't use Hyper-V. Further, some of us are older'n dirt, which means learning new stuff isn't as easily done as it used to be. We are keeping our minds active, though . . .
