Western Digital has reportedly exited the SSD market

 wccftech:

It seems like the storage industry isn't having a great time in terms of gaining traction in the consumer markets, since after Solidigm, Western Digital, one of the leading SSD manufacturers, has decided to exit the industry. According to a report by TechSpot, Western Digital will now focus solely on its native hard disk technology, with the SSD division being spun off into SanDisk. This means that lineups like WD_BLACK will now be manufactured by SanDisk instead of WD themselves, and this will ultimately mean that Western Digital branding won't be there anymore.

This is indeed a surprising development, especially for consumers who are fond of Western Digital's SSD products. WD has been included alongside names like Samsung and Crucial when it comes to offering high-end SSDs with blazing-fast speeds, so seeing the brand fade away is something we weren't expecting at all. However, this doesn't mean that WD products will disappear from the markets; rather, they will be taken care of by SanDisk, so we do expect the quality to remain consistent.

This article is missing context. WD bought SanDisk in 2016, and last month completed a planned split of SanDisk into a new IPO company. WD transferred all of its Flash products (incuding SSD's) into SanDisk, and continues to own part of the new company.

Seems more like a case of partitioning the two companies - each designated to its own product recognition. Thus, we have Western Digital = HDDs & SanDisk = SSDs. Makes more sense - than Western Digital covering both (HDDs & SSDs) - thus, sort of competing against their own brand (SanDisk). This way - it's clear that SanDisk is their SSD division - while WD their HDD division. SanDisk was not doing very well - so maybe this helps (earning more trust and increasing sells - while a direct derivative of WD). Worldwide WD is 2nd after Seagate - in terms of HDD sells - but i think it's 1st in USA...

You have two different markets. WD sells mostly to PC makers, which is a stable business but boring in profit growth. SanDisk is retail, where your profits can wildly fluctuate. The highs and lows are much different that the drive business, and the stock market treats you differently.

What's interesting is WD's CEO moved to SanDisk, and WD promoted an insider to be their new CEO.

This seems like old news already. I knew about this transfer since sometime in 2024.

Yep. The plan was first announced in Oct 2023.
I didn't remember seeing this in 2023, but by later on in 2024, there was the web site restructuring.

So is Seagate also going to split itself up?

Then after that, Seagate and WD HDD businesses merge, and the ex-Seagate and Sandisk businesses merge. And then Westgate buys the Sandisk company. You heard it here first.:p

Western Digital didn't want the company to become fragmented, so the SSD division will be spun off to SanDisk to allow it to remain trim.
