What factors determine which of these two login screens will appear.

Strange question. I have Fast Start enabled (all default settings) and I notice that sometimes I see one screen and sometimes the other. What determines which one will appear?

My reason for asking is that if the photo/picture appears then it takes a further few (annoying) seconds until the keyboard is enabled to actually log in. I can tap the enter key for five or six seconds before anything happens. If the blue screen appears then the keyboard is active immediately. This behaviour is consistent.

So just curious as what determines which screen will appear.

Good question, so am I.

BTW, that's the Lock screen, not the Login screen. The Login screen is the one that appears after you have tapped.

I have some machines that consistently get the default blue 'Bloom' picture at start up, and others that (most of the time) show the 'image of the day' even though they are all set to show the Spotlight picture on the Lock screen.

I can't offer any explanation, but I'll be watching to see if anyone else can....

I don't use any of these on either Win 10 or Win 11... but they may help...

And this is a Win 10 pic, but there should be something similar under Settings > Personalization > Lockscreen ...on Win 11.

I don't remember exactly how I did it... but I have the same pic on my Win 11 lockscreen, all the time, and no messages on the lock screen either.

Different pic, but the same is true for Win 10. Pic doesn't change, and no messages.

I didn't do a clean install of Win 11. I did an In-Place Upgrade from Win 10 to Win 11.
So a lot of my Win 10 tweaks, came along for the ride, which is why I don't know how I did some of them.

Well, I know how I did them, but they can only be reproduced if you do them on Win 10 and then do the In-Place Upgrade from Win 10 to Win 11.

@Ghot Thanks. I do see what you show under 'settings'. Currently todays image. Just had a thought this minute and wondered if there was some intentional delay to make you look at the image and info, like having to watch the first few seconds of an ad before skipping it.

Tweakable settings for everything lol. I see you liked that one.

It's more curiosity really as to why the (or my) keyboard is unresponsive when the picture shows but is fine when its the blue screen image. Tonight and I got the blue screen... who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Some guesses...

1. The RED rock screen has ads, so to speak. Maybe the keyboard is made inaccessible to force you to read the ads, for lack of anything else to do.

2. I've noticed on both Win 10 and 11, that you have to click the mouse in a spot right below where the password gets entered, before you can do anything not mouse related, on the lock screen.

Might want to check Event Viewer when you get the red rocks picture, see if anything is in there.
Some thing that might be related to the keyboard or USB ports?

I'm going to observe a bit more. I suspect the mouse is unresponsive as well during those few seconds (its a Bluetooth connected one) but I want to see if it is the same with the blue screen.

As soon as the blue screen appears pressing any key instantly brings up the password login box.

I wonder about ads to and that it might be by design.

Something that wireless is or isn't doing on the red screen, compared to the blue??

On both Win 10 and Win 11... the instant I saw diff lock screen pics... I set them to one specific pic.
Not for any keyboard responsiveness reasons, but because of OCD.

I try to turn off the things I consider... "junk" in Windows. I just want the basic Windows.
If I want "junk" I can easily find it on the internet. I seem to have fewer problems with the "junk" disabled.

I try to run a lean, mean, computin' machine.

Seriously... if it has a keyboard driver, maybe reinstalling that would help?
You're pretty much gonna have to just "guess" things until you come across something that affects it or gives you a clue.

My guesses are these...

1. Set the lock screen to a specific pic, to help with troubleshooting.
2. Disable lock screen messages.
3. Disable ads.
4. If you have anything like lock screen slide show enabled... disable it.

Aaaaymen, Brother Ben! OTOH, I spend a lot of time getting rid of the bloat and unnecessary clutter, and then every time there's a major update, good ol' MS puts the garbage back again. (grumble, grumble, grumble)

Good question -- not sure that I'm bothered with the effect as how long does one look at the login screen !!!! You usually want to login and get working straight away. The LOCK screen usually shows the correct Spotlight picture though (or whatever option you have chosen).
