Windows 11 Pro
Win 11 Pro 24H2. Just did an in-place install of 11 (over 10), installed a few apps and used Explorer Patcher to attach a Quick Launch toolbar. I ended up with the icon pointed at in the attached screenshot over on the far left next to Open Shell. What is it called and how can it be deleted or hidden? Thanks,

Left side of taskbar.webp

No need to see this icon. If you need task view just press WIN+TAB. Remember the "3D flip" feature in Windows Vista and 7? It was the same key combination. In Windows 10 and 11 instead of the "3D flip" you see small previews of your open applications and you can find the one you want and click to bring it in the foreground. More useful than pressing ALT+TAB (task switch) many times until you find the application. In case you have many open instances of the same application, they all appear with the same icon (or thumbnail) in task switch and this is not helping find the specific instance you want. With task view you can visually spot it. Plus you don't need to keep the keys pressed, just press the combination once to see the small previews and take your time to find the one you want. If you changed your mind and want to return to the current application, press the combination again. In the task view you are also allowed to add one or more virtual desktops so you can switch between them, there is no need to keep all your applications on the same desktop.

I don’t have a WIN key. I don’t usually have more than two programs open at once, so Alt-Tab has been sufficient over the decades.

You don't have a Win key? Are you sure? You must have an interesting keyboard.

It is the key between CTRL and ALT on a standard PC keyboard. On a Mac keyboard it is the Command key. What keyboard do you have?

spapakons, What part of "I don't have a WIN key" is not understandable? And do you really think that someone who can maneuver three relatively sophisticated options for solving a problem, which you linked to on another thread at the same time for me (Word icon images), wouldn't know where the WIN key was, or if they had one, or not? I appreciate that you help a lot of users. Perhaps to many at once?

Btw, on the Word icon images thread about earlier I stated very clearly that I have an old IBM Model M keyboard. Or is that before your time?

My first computer was an PC XT clone (Intel 8088 4.77MHz CPU or 10MHz with turbo on, 640KB RAM, 256KB Paradise VGA, 40MB Seagate hard disk on special 8-bit controller card, 5.25" and 3.5" floppy disk drives). It had 84-key XT compatible keyboard (that with the large DIN connector) and a serial mouse. My first OS was MS-DOS 3.3 later upgraded to 5.0 and 6.22 Yes, I am that old. I just thought you had a typical PC keyboard, I didn't know you are using an old keyboard without WIN keys. I didn't mean to offend you.

You might mentioned you have an IBM model M, but naturally I thought was just an old desktop or laptop. I didn't know it is a relic from the '80s! How would I know? You just said you don't have a WIN key. You didn't explain this is because you are using a vintage keyboard, so my logical assumption was that you might be a Mac user running Windows in Parallels or Boot Camp. That's why I said it is the Command key on a Mac keyboard. Next time be more accurate. Nobody implied that you are a newbie that cannot spot the WIN key on the keyboard, although the thought that you might not understand WIN is short for Windows crossed my mind.

Because you were conversing with me at the very same time on another thread, and I had stated it explicitly there. But still, it doesn't matter: If someone says they don't have a WIN key and they seem reasonably able, then who are you to question it?

Btw, on the Word icon images thread about earlier I stated very clearly that I have an old IBM Model M keyboard.

Even if you have it in your specs or mentioned on another thread, I am not supposed to remember IBM model M is a vintage model from the '80s without the WIN key. You could have kindly explain it in this thread. You just said you don't have a WIN key, while you should have added "because I am using a vintage keyboard". If I had seen that I wouldn't try to tell you what the WIN key is. In this forum we assume the poster is novice user, not stupid, when asking simple questions.
