Where can I get a good subtitle extractor for .mkv files?

Hello,

I'm looking for an app that will extract subtitles from .mkv files. Something that will do multiple files in batches.

I thought of using MKVCleaver but when I ran it through VirusTotal, it came out totally infected with malware. Not good. ☹️

Anybody out there know of something else out there?

Hi, and thanks.

That looks like it somehow creates subtitles from voice dictation. I'm looking for extracting .srt, .ssa, .ass, etc.. files that already exist in the video file.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

This command in a Command Prompt will extract subtitle stream #2 from all .mkv files in the current directory.

for %N in (*.mkv) do ffmpeg -i "%N" -map 0:2 "%N.srt"

I use gMKVExtractGUI. Only works together with mkvtoolnix.

Get mkvtoolnix (2 variants, installer or portable, I use portable because it's on another drive).

Extract gMKVExtractGUI and move all files into mkvtoolnix folder.

Launch gMKVExtractGUI.exe and extract whatever you want.

For a very long time I have also used gMKVExtractGUI. It is very simple to use and allows you to extract the subtitles (SRT and others) from one or more MKVs at once. Then, to edit or correct the subtitles, I use SubtitleEdit. Both programs are open source and you shouldn't have any problems with viruses.

I am using a portable version: SubtitleEdit
You can also download the Installer if you wish.
Open settings to configure with player of your choice, I use VLC.
- Open MKV file with embedded subtitle(s), select one.
- Click on File->Save as .srt or other format

Yeah, that's kinda what I'm looking for. :-) Only I'd like to drag and drop a whole bunch of mkv files into one batch and extract them all, all at once.

I'm not into mapping pathways and entering in command lines at all.

I looked at that. Looked very promising. Only thing is VirusTotal says it's heavily infected with malware. 😒 Bummer.

SubtitleEdit is good for editing the content of sub files, but it can only extract it one file at a time.

Yeah, if the extracted subtitle files are in graphical, or image-based format (.mks or .sup), you can use Subtitle Edit to convert them to text-based subtitle files (.srt). Subtitle Edit has Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to achieve this specific conversion step as needed.
