I have a sneaking suspicion that the reason no sides are currently offered is because they think that desktop users will use multiple monitors and tablet users will have a tb that is too small on the sides, because they always use tablets in landscape mode.

OK, those are truly my own conspiracy-theory -laden thoughts, nothing more, and definitely nothing official lol.... But based on their past decisions, I can see this being a reality....

That could be true.. or they could be lazy. Why make a change when they don't have to? My bet is when the final version comes out later on that there will be 3rd party apps to allow users to move the task bar all over,, top right and left.

I just don't get it to be honest. Real hard core programmers/hackers love a challenge and this would be one, IMO. I've been programming for 43 years and I love to code and do new things. This would be fun to me. Unfortunately not all programmers are like me.. many are lazy and don't want to learn or be challenged.

Nah. if they wanted to be lazy, they'd have left it like it was in 10. Easier to do that than to recode to remove the side docks.

Heck, way easier to leave the entire taskbar, with the settings, folder pins, everything that it can do in 10 rather than start fresh with this basic one in 11. THAT would've been lazy.

True.. I wold just wish they left it as it was in 10. But no,, they had to change it. If they don't plan on making it like 10 an explanation why they don't plan on doing it would be nice

I'm reserving judgment only because I've already been proven wrong about the changes. Early builds didn't allow using the keyboard at all with the Win+X power menu, but they added that back in last build, so I'm hopeful that they are building it from scratch for a reason. Like, maybe, separating the taskbar into its own process, separate from explorer.exe, so that those stupid apps that restart the taskbar after installing an update won't restart all of explorer....

I mean, I can hope that that is the case, right?

I can hope but I don't expect them to make that change now or in the future

I do. It was mentioned very very early on that taskbar.exe is a separate process from explorer.exe.


We may not get full functionality, (I suspect they may never bring pinned folders back) but it should be pretty close.

I would have thought that the process of changes to an OS is to get quickly to were you want with the least amount of clicks.

I had to create a shortcut to my desktop to have my excel and text files that I use on a regular basis. The Start menu should at least give you the option to fully use the Window instead of turning of recent files message. I also like to have links at hand on main screen, gone also.

So like I said (in my case) it's more clicks than less clicks.

Right. Same as me using Winkey + X --> M to open Device manager. But it was not present in the leak 21996.1, nor 22000.51 / 65 / 100.

It was only after 22000.120 was pushed out that this functionality was restored.

So, since taskbar.exe is new, and separate, all of that functionality we had in the past (that actually came from explorer.exe) now has to be integrated into taskbar.exe,.

And I sincerely hope that it all gets re-integrated.

Well, since the consensus is that Windows 11 is Windows 10 with a facelift, I don't see a reason for the deterioration of the taskbar.

Can't help but wonder if Microsoft's staff actually use desktop computers at all.

I don't really care. I can probably get used to it most anywhere. I've always had the task bar at the bottom, mostly because it's always been there. Now (centered) it reminds me of my old apple computer. As @tinmar49 says above, left might be better. I've started using Edge with tabs on the left, and it does make some sense.

If you fill the task bar up it up it will end shuffling off to the left anyway.

Bottom, only because that's where I have always kept it.

Top - Desktop, bottom - Laptop.
