Contemporary architecture with vintage AC power. Interesting. Yup. I'd definitely be investing in some UPS — perhaps three of the things for other devices as well. Canada code wouldn't even allow places like this to be rented until the wiring was upgraded to breakers.

I mean if you're AC power is still dependant on fuses the wiring doesn't meet Canadian regulations. In Canada an inspector would insist that a breaker box be installed.

Do know if the wiring is the original. To me it looks like it may be original. I know in the US houses use to be wired with two single strand wires running through insulators. There was no ground wires. From your pics I like the second apartment with the old wiring. If posible get an estimate on the cost of upgrading the wiring before making your decision.

In the US or at least in the state I live in, the power company is responsible for the wire from the pole to the house. From the connection on the house to the meter is the home owners responsibility. The meter is the reasonability of the power company. The meter box and everything after the meter is the home owners responsibility.

It's the same in Canada.

It's similar in the Uk. The electricity company is responsible for the cables running to the property, and the meter box, but the fuse box itself is the responsibility of the home owner, along with the wiring. So you take your own risks! Sometimes people put a new fuse box on with older wiring in the hope the fuses will just trip if there's a problem, rather than a fire. But if the wiring is really old it should be replaced as well.

Not sure as each jurisdiction supplies own rules -- but in general the company is responsible for connection to its services - the bit from connection to the service in your own property is your responsibility -- e.g drains, water, sewage are your problem from connections under your land until the public connection point". Same with electricity -- up to the meter it's their problem -- after the meter it's yours. - Not sure about the UK where a lot of older properties still have electric / gas meters on the inside of properties.


As for renting regulations -- can't say about elsewhere but here electrical connections etc have to be passed as fit by building standards regs = and if building is in "multi occupation" -- e.g a block of flats or letting to a group of unrelated students then stricter codes apply including energy efficiency and fireproof doors etc.


However some "landlords" / property companies aren't always 100% scrupously honest and many tenants don't want to complain in case they are awarded eviction notices for their troubles.

I'd advise any youngsters as soon as possible to try and buy their own place rather than rent -- that way "your fate is in your own hands" rather than in the hands of others who probably just want to make a shed load of money at minimum cost.

Again. From a technical stand point I highly recommend using UPS units. Every main PC in my residence runs on a UPS even though the wiring is new and up to standard. That said, being in a fairly remote area of the Province largely subject to the elements of weather and climate, we often experience brown outs and surges. I've lost track of how many times our UPS units have saved our computers from data loss or flat out bricking.

If it was In the US, I doubt the buyer would be able to get a mortgage for the apartment until the owner brought it up to code. A couple of years ago my neighbors decided to sell their house. It was just used for a vacation home. Before they could sell it they had to spend around $20,000.00 to install an above ground septic system.
