I have both wired and wireless net adapter in my dell inspiron 3910 desktop.
I could choose both wired and wireless connection in my desktop.
My query is which connection would give more speed in my desktop and connected wifi access .
Now I use wifi adapter connection and I am having wifi access to other devices including tv
I heard somewhere that ethernet, ie, wired connection gives much speed compared to wireless connection.
is that true.
If I change to my connection to my desktop through ethernet and wifi access by other devices will i experience more speed than what I am getting
I am having fibre connection and my router is configured to my desktop and also for wifi access in my digisol pon router

Yes, generally Ethernet will offer better speeds than using Wi-Fi, and there isn't any real advantage of not using Ethernet with a desktop.

If you can run a cable, you will always have better performance that way.

Hi, thanks for the clue.
but what I notice is even though the net access is fine, the youtube video song is playing,sometimes it is nice speed followed by slow, very slow and suddenly becoming normal.
This is in a older system.
there is no explorer error.
the internet connection is fine. I also note, typing also becoming slow in browser.
i am using latest firefox browser.
what would be a fix

It all depends on the router and the WiFi card you have...with todays modern hardware, the only difference you see is more stability with cable compared to WiFi. Even then, this is all depending on how congested the frequency bands are in your area and how many devices are connected to your wireless network. Also if you are far away from the router, you will see decreased performance. With cable, the connection either works or it des not.

For me response times and throughput (bandwidth) are exactly the same on both wireless and cable connections. Keep in mind that my Router was 550€, and has a very fast processor/chips. And I am quite close to the router.

Your comment on new hardware is so true but people get into their thick nozzles that once wifi is perceived as "SLOW" it wil remain slow for evermore -- the same sort of people who are worried about "wearing out SSD drives" -- even though the 2.5 inch ones are rapidly becoming obsolete and being replaced by Nvme cards -- I use several of these now with USBC adpaters -- far faster than any other USB connection !!.

The old wifi 54g half duplex cards are old history now.

Wifi slower than Lan is not always so true these days --newest wifi protocols allow theoretical max transfer of over 1.2 Gbps -- some Lan cards have a max of 100 Mbps !!-- also now you can use full duplex for wifi --that used to usually work at half-duplex. You need the newer technology both at the computer and at the WAN for the internet (ISP) and also at your LAN for the router.

I use a Blackhawk Wifi extender in a shed over 100 metres from main router and still getting great wifi speeds. (again expensive piece of kit with router but worth it -- was also around €500 or so)

It's not that throughput of wifi is slow, but rather it can be inconsistent and depending upon the number of wifi devices you have connected and how many access points you have and their quality, can make wifi less reliable. I have the vast majority of my house hardwired, I try to keep my wifi for phones, ring cameras, smart devices, etc.

Also, if you game, occasionally ping spikes which I get from time to time over wifi can really become a problem. This problem is non-existent for my wired connections.

Connect one and take a speed test.
Then, connect the ethernet and take a speed test.
Look at the Ping and see which one is lowest.
this should give you some idea as to which one is preferable.

Both connections give download and upload speed 67mbps speed.
both pings at 4.
what is that meant ?
I think, that my system has both wifi and ethernet adapter as real hardware and this is the result.
what should i prefer hi, Flash

If it's a desktop PC, then connect using ethernet, but if it's a laptop and you move it around the house, definitely use WiFi.

In your case, you'll have to see which one is more stable. You mentioned that Youtube is sometimes
slow so, if you were on a WiFi connection, I would be inclined to say that the Ethernet would be the way to go.
Mine is a notebook but, does not move around (battery is awful) so, it stays on Ethernet all the time.
You'll have to play around with it to see which one you like best.

I get the same speed and Ping all the time on cable. They have been after me for quite some
time to change over to Fiber but, am reluctant. The only time I upload is when I have important
docs. that have to be preserved so, no big files.
I have to say, Europe has been Way ahead of North-America in as far as connectivity is concerned.
I guess Greed has a big part to play.

Yes over there price is sometimes ridiculous and speed almost non-existant in places like New York...for the rest, your issue is the massive area you have to wire. It gets expensive really fast.

Yes, in the States but, here in Canada, they have been converting to Fiber for many years now. Plus, there is no to almost
no competition. Here there are 3 big Tel companies that control most of the market share. The other smaller ones have or
are about to be swallowed up by them. Our Gov. is Deaf to all the feedback from US. faffs me off.

Most Dell laptops I have used only has a 10/100 Ethernet port, my Dell Inspiron P75F will go up to 433 Mbps on WiFi.
