White Ticks in a Green Circle for Icons?

I started getting those white tick marks in a green circle for icons on my desktop for no obvious reason. I'm not syncing the Desktop in OneDrive. I toggled Sync Provider Notifications in File Explorer off / on which fixed the issue but I have no idea why those tick marks appeared.

Despite what you "think" you have done with Onedrive, your device is still associated with onedrive. The circular green with white checkmark icon are indication that those files have been marked as "Always keep on this device".

If your goal initially was to completely unlink the device from onedrive, you did it wrong or in an incomplete manner..

No - I selected which folders to sync with the PC and Desktop is not selected.

A chat with CoPilot suggested yesterday's Defender update may have caused the issue due to a bug since the issue happened around the same time as the update. Anyway the issue is now fixed by toggling that File Explorer option.
