I've never used a mouse with my laptops, either. That's why I rely heavily on the trackpad/touchpad. And copying Apple was a load of bullsh*t as well. If I wanted an Apple, I would've bought an Apple. Business laptops don't have to have all that 'moderne' sheen to them. They need to be utilitarian in order to get the work done. They're not meant for gaming or any of that other stuff.

Can you not tell the difference between an old-fashioned mechanical rocker-button touchpad and a modern haptic touchpad?

That's why I prefer to manually download all the drivers from manufacturer and then clean install Windows, so I have zero bloatware. If I want to use an OEM utility I get to choose which one, not get all the useless bunch.

All my laptops that have a touchpad without any separate left/right buttons actually have mechanical switches hidden beneath the bottom left/right corners of the touchpad - and they still click like any visible button when you press those corners of the touchpad.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

I still have a couple of 2018 Dell Latitudes that have mechanical buttons. Using both types of touchpads, I still find the mechanical ones easier to use.

That's what I thought too, until Lenovo started pushing them back on me. They acted the same way as Microsoft did by doing this.

They're still mechanical in my later Dell Latitudes, the only difference is that the touchpad now covers the switches, allowing the touchpad to be significantly larger by occupying the space that was once reserved for the buttons. Pressing on the touchpad still feels exactly the same as pressing on a button.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

I think mine's about the same size and have never had any problem with it. When I bought mine, it had a bigger touchpad than my old HP nc6400 did, so I wasn’t complaining. 😉

Yes but they are not the same as the traditional separate buttons. If I had a laptop without separate buttons I would use a USB mouse.

Speaking of privacy, over half the brick and mortar stores in this country now use AI-powered video analytics to track general shopper movement, traffic patterns, and behavior. They watch how long you linger in an aisle, which products you pick up, and how you move through the store. I think I prefer Amazon for shopping privacy lol.

Some of our latest Dell laptops at work have been a pain in the *ss. I had a Dell Latitude 3490 which ended up locking at 900mhz constantly. Even after a reformat through Dell SupportAssist.

Some colleagues are reporting frequent BSOD or unexpected reboots from their latest AMD laptops. And those are up to date if you check with Dell Update.

More generally if you consider the entire inventory, it's not that much issues. But on new laptops it's very frustrating.

Furthermore, Dell software and drivers are just some s*itty bloatware we don't even need. Useless undocumented processes and apps doing god knows what...

The Dell Precision in my specs had the most bloated factory software setup I've ever seen. I used it for about 4 minutes before deciding to wipe the system drive.
