There is no such things as a "genuine test". My cheap third-party power adapters all work with my Dells.
Other chargers work just fine as long as the CC pins are working, as noted above.
I have a number of different brand and size USB-C chargers scattered in different places throughout my house. I can tell you that my 4-month-old Dell System One listed below will charge from any one of them.
Here in Greece it is far more common for an individual to build his PC to order by choosing parts, than buy a pre-built OEM computer because the OEM used to be much more expensive (you pay for the brand name, as we say) and often had compromises in the components. Slower CPU than you wanted, you had to buy a more expensive model if you wanted faster. Just buying the same model with better CPU was rarely an option. Less RAM than you wanted, to add more you had to replace all the modules because usually they occupied all slots. Same for hard disk. So to truly customize it would cost much more than build to order because you kept the original parts, you couldn't trade them and pay the difference. We even had some choice on build to order laptops. Large computer store chains would buy barebones from China (usually some Clevo model) and then install the CPU the amount of RAM and the size of disk you wanted. You paid for the empty laptop body plus the parts. Much better than compromise with pre-build models, but of course quality was lower due to the cheap barebones. For most users that would do office work and play the occasional game, it was an ideal solution. Mostly professionals or companies would buy OEM models, rarely an average individual. And back then we rarely consider a laptop for gaming. We always bought a desktop computer.
I prefer to be mobile. I had my new Dell System One listed below built to my specs. It's my 7th custom-built Dell in the past 25 years. It's used mostly for Interactive Brokers Trader Workstation, Visual Studio software development, and Photoshop/Lightroom. It's fast and quite capable.
For my mobile I carry a charger with me and I also have a cable with three ends, one USB Type-C, one Lightning and one micro-USB, so I can charge any mobile or small device, but for a laptop it is a little large to carry it with me all the times...Well I have the additional luxury of having two power supplies in two different locations in my house so I don't have to carry the power supply along with it, so I got ya beat there, Gary...
Some time in the future maybe, when all devices have USB Type-C and they make chargers the size of a mobile charger but powerful enough to use with a laptop.
Yes. I have two laptops that charge by usb-c, both bought as used. The Dell came with its own Dell usb-c 100W charger, the Lenovo had lost its original charger and came instead with an HP usb-c 45W charger. Both chargers will charge either of the laptops (and any other usb-c device).
All my devices now use USB-C, so I only carry one lightweight USB-C charger in my backpack. Agree on the Dell Support Assist software, it's a memory and resource hog and sometimes breaks when the software for it updates. If you don't want to remove it you can just disable it in services and save some RAM. It's easy to just download the driver's from the Dell Support Site for your machine model. As far as drivers I've had issues with the generic NVIDIA GPU drivers breaking S0 modern standby so I stick with the Dell NVIDIA versions for compatibility reasons.
Since I have a Dell/Alienware machine I do have to keep two Dell services enabled since they are needed for Alienware Command Center to function properly which I need. However Dell Support Assist is not needed and uses a lot of RAM just sitting enabled in the background not even being used.
Thanks for explaining/the YouTube link Bree. It doesn't sound a good idea putting a laptop in any kind of sleep and then putting it in any kind of backpack/rucksack. We use both backpack/rucksack in The UK. Found out recently rucksack is a German word.

I'd missed TraderGary meant was quipping he doesn't put his laptops in a backpack before shutting down laptops. Odd when I hadn't said I was moving the laptop
Anyway.
Now some fellow posters understand why I insist on official drivers directly from Intel/nVidia/AMD. In the rare case that the hardware is customised, the installer will let you know. Only in that case I download chipset and graphics drivers from the computer or individual component manufacturer. I rarely let Windows Update to upgrade my drivers and much rarer I use a driver tool such as Snappy Driver Installer. Installing all the official drivers improves performance and compatibility and stability.
