Why do I have to click twice to select something in a MS program that's not in focus?


Yes, Linux has that option. But I don't want that. Where my mouse is might not be where I want to type. Actually I'll give it a go and see what happens. Argh! 500ms is way too long, adjusting in regedit....

Anyone else having trouble following this thread .. I really haven't a clue what's going on, absolutely no problem(s) here with MS programs.

If I've got multiple MS products open (e.g. along the Taskbar) clicking once immediately brings that program (back) into focus, and I can start typing straight away from the last location the cursor was placed/left ?

I'm talking about clicking within the application, not on the taskbar. Have two windows open and visible. Be working in one, then click somewhere in the other.

Ahh, now I see what you're talking about. I've never really paid much attention to it before. When you look around on the web, it seems people have been complaining about it in Office for a long time. I found some threads dated 2005. It's just another one of the things where MS is not consistent in their design, and where their right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.

I have both Excel (2010) and LibreOffice Calc. I can confirm this odd behaviour in MS Office.

I have them both open in two windows side by side with just an empty worksheet in each, then I click on the Taskbar so that neither has focus.

Now I just left-click on a cell in Calc, it is selected immediately. Then I click on a cell in Excel. This just transfers focus to Excel, but does not select the cell I clicked on, the selected cell remains whichever one was previously selected. I have to click again to select the one I tried to click on.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

What I want to know is why Microsoft never listens to the millions of people complaining, and using 3rd party utilities like startallback to fix their broken interface. The Windows 11 start menu when I installed it had ONE app visible. Just ONE!

After one right click > Paste, the only "extra" click is to choose the format of the Paste Option > Source Formatting, Text only, etc. I'd say that offer is an advantage.

Still can't see a problem ?

The problem only occurs if the program in question (typically an MS Office app like Excel) does not have focus - in other words you have clicked on another Window before trying to click on it and the other program is the current active window.

Re-read my post #27 for a demonstration of the 'one click or two' issue.

Bad example, not sure why I gave you that one, that appears to work ok. Now try this. Have program X in focus with Word or Wordpad in the background. Click a menu in Word or Wordpad. Nothing happens! You have to click a second time.

Correct for my machines, Win10/Win11/Win7/WinXP/LinuxMint, first click gets the focus and second click performs the function.

Which is very annoying. If you told me my house is on fire, would you expect to have to say "excuse me, can I talk to you a minute" first?

I akin the process to what it takes to drive a car, turn the key to start then put it in gear, if using a stick shift push in the clutch first, start then put in gear then release the clutch to go. Since I was raised on a farm I started learning to drive tractors at 10, classmates in Driver's Ed when I was 16 had problems with a stick shift, I only took the class so I didn't have to take the DMV process to get my license.

I guess my mindthought doesn't work the same when driving my cars with automatics, after I sit behind the wheel they don't start and go on their own, I have to my part and computers are the same, actually all machines and devices require some type of human interaction. Aliens would likely be a different story.

Yes, but you don't have to tell a car twice what to do. If you're busy using the accelerator etc, then you decide the radio should be louder, you don't have to select the radio first, then press the volume button. You just press the volume button.
