Why does Windows 11 need secure boot


So true.. and it goes past that. Many users don't know what the BIOS is for and how to modify it let along update it. As more and more people try to upgrade to 11 they'll run into loads of issues.. go to local shops and pay an arm/leg to have the upgrade done.

Well, we don't charge an arm and a leg. Provided that the user already has a genuine Windows 7 or later license, we charge 20-30€ for the work. If he also wants to upgrade hdd to SSD and RAM he also pays for the components. Not all professionals try to make a fortune from a single customer.

Many shops that I know of are bypassing the requirements and their installing 11 on non compliant hardware.

Makes you wonder what other things they do. In the reputable repair business, they are called "Pizza Techs".
I have seen many over the years install bootleg software including Windows and Office. Ignore EULA's and more.
And many forum users encourage it. Not just here.

I took my rig to a local shop.. not a good experience. But when the guy found out that I was using 11 he was just about salivating over the prospects of the money he was going to make helping people go to 11 from 10

Most shops in my area charge 25-40 just to look a PC over and then the cost goes up. And yes... they also installed cracked code etc.. I did have a great shop but the guy went out of business after COVIID hit

Might want to try to find him and see if he just moved the business home/mobile instead of having the expense of a shop.
Many did. Most, enjoy working on computers but alas some either get burnt out or moved to the MSP model of computer service.
The "break/fix business model is not what was it was several years ago.

Do your hunting BEFORE the need arises. Good honest LOCAL techs are good to have. I have 20 years of happy clients that followed me home so to speak after shutting down 5 years ago.

I personally think you're making this out to be more boogeyman than it is. I also think system builders will have no issues since we're used to dealing with the BIOS in setting up our systems anyway (I am).

And those who buy a vendor-built system should have no issues either as their system's BIOS has already been setup. The only people who "may" have issues are those who venture into something they're unfamiliar with.

Technicians who discourage customers to upgrade to Windows 11 just because of some stupid system requirements are going to be beaten by the competition. It is a perfect chance to have more business as these customers cannot rely on Microsoft for official support and they are going to ask you for small price. And I never mentioned installing Windows 11 illegally. I always use a valid license and activate Windows with Microsoft, either online or by phone. Please don't spread false news. This thread is very US centric. Even in the UK (and most of Europe), it costs an arm and a leg to go to a computer repair shop, and they are not common either.

I think most users will just read message pc is not compatible and just not bother and will wait until they need a new pc. In my experience most people would not have a clue how to adjust settings in bios (or even have a clue what the bios even is).

Next time you have a group of (non computer savvy) friends around, ask them what bios is an anacronym for.

Then ask them what UEFI is (in Europe, I bet most people will guess football related LOL).

One of the side effects of modern computer technology is most people do not need to know basics of HOW a computer works, and consequently never learn. When I was a sprog, we had to understand some basics to use them.


The app that changed the world was visicalc. It enabled ordinary peopie to do complicated calculations without understanding how to write conventional computer programs. Of course, peole are programming when they create a spreadsheet but they just do not realise that!

That takes me back in the 80's and 90's. You needed some basic knowledge about PC hardware and MS DOS commands to launch and play games. Almost any game of the era would ask for your graphics card, Hercules (monochrome), CGA (4 colors), EGA (16 colors) or VGA (16-256 colors). If you didn't know the answer, either the game would not run or you would play at a lower graphics quality than your hardware was capable of. Let alone you should know the appropriate MS DOS commands to change from hard disk to floppy, list the contents, detect the game executable and run it. Using the appropriate parameters if needed (such as the R parameter in Taito games used to change configuration). Today all they do is double click on the shortcut to launch the game.

And that's a problem as many early PC enthusiasts who built then, but don't now are finding things are not as they were yesteryear.

As a system builder since 1998 with my last build in 2019 (system specs), I had to learn about all sorts of things hardware, firmware (BIOS/UEFI) and software (Windows, drivers) and how they relate to each other. Extremely useful for troubleshooting and/or maintaining a properly operating PC.
