Linux is pathetic for scientific and engineering situations.

Major engineering software has taken years to develop and all are Windows based.

Ask any IT guy in any major oil or civil/electrical/mechanical engineering company LOL.

There are many reasons, why one cannot just "simply" replace Windows with Linux, and "scaling" is nothing to do with it.

When one is very familiar with Linux, one will know, there are numerous ways of "scaling fonts", if it is "not automatically enabled" with your installed distro.

Scaling is not automatically enabled in RHEL Workstation, but it is in Ubuntu, Fedora, probably others.

Seasoned Linux veterans, will install Linux, then install Gnome Tweaks/Extensions Manager, and then "go in", on the desktop/theme customizing, to a level unheard of with Windows, it's just a Linux thing.

I have a Ubuntu Linux box which is my daily driver, next to it is a hefty dual processor box, that I dual boot to either Windows 11 for work/Citrix/MS Office, or I boot to Fedora, for messing with piles of Docker/Splunk/Oracle containers, or playing with/learning new technologies.

Best of both Worlds.

I hesitate to even contribute to this thread. :LOL: I've run Linux on several boxes, one thing I do appreciate is that it's an O/S that can run for months without booting, something that I've never achieved with any Windows version. Typically, I reboot Windows because I need to, not because I want to. Embedded systems are a perfect candidate for Linux, simply because of it's reliability and stability.

That being said, there are still a number of things I use that don't have Linux equivalents, that poses a significant roadblock for me. I'm sure I could find alternatives for most applications, but there's just not the ROI to make me want to switch. Windows may not be perfect, but it's "good enough". :-)

I have to say I really like Xubuntu! I have it on a 10" netbook and it reminds me of Windows 7 again, once I finished setting things up how I wanted. But when installing it on a 14" laptop - UGH! Honestly I couldn't believe it. I mean Ok maybe you're expected to tweak resolution (as mentioned above) but how can you even do that when the menus are too small to see? Btw Xubuntu sometimes throws an error straight after installing but just ignore it and it goes away and loads up fine. (Although that might be just on my machine).

There are different versions available - I'm referring to the long term support version. Maybe it's been resolved in the latest short term version, but apparently that isn't stable.

Aye, some distros are "fiends" for this.

My 2x monitors are excellent LG G-Sync 27", can go up to 1080p @ 144hz (purchase reason), or 4K @60hz.

God help me, if ze distro first time login screen, sets screen to max res of both gpu card and monitor !!!

Yep - Supercomputers are for raw processing speed e.g. for soving complex algorithms e.g. for chaos theory. These applications are very specialist but of no use to the mainstream tools used by engineers in particular.

People whinge about paying a couple of hundred pounds yearly for tools like Adobe Pro. A one user licence for a process simulator like Aspentech costs ovrr £20,000 per year.

Tools like these are only on Windows - it would take years to port them to Linux and why would the owners of such tools bother when it would be an extremely limited market?

Yet again, Linux users are so tedious making claims about how it is a viable solution to Windows when we all know that is basic nonsense for most users.

On reflection, this thread is typical Linux trolling and (in my opinion) the moderators should consider shutting it down as it adds zero value to this forum.
