WiFi Connection occasionally changes

Every now and then my WiFi connection on my desktop will change by itself. My WiFi connection to my Comcast router is named Comcast1. I have a WiFi extender named Rock Space 2.4. I have deselected to not connect to the the extender multiple times. I wouldn't care except that the signal is about half the signal strength of the Comcast router. For whatever reason it just happened again.Is there a way to stop my desktop from connecting to the extender and only use the connection to the Comcast router?

Go to your WiFi settings and 'Forget' the connection you don't want.

Or, if you may want to remember it, click on it's name and just turn off 'Connect automatically'.

I wish it was that easy. I have tried it and it doesnt work.

If you 'Forget' the connection there should be no way it can connect, it won't know the Wifi password any more.

That's the problem, it doesn't forget. For whatever reason the connection changes and I don't know why. It was happing before and stopped by itself. Now it's doing it again.

I replaced my old router + half speed extender with a mesh system. Now I have the same fast speed anywhere in my house and have only one WiFi connection name.

I have the all-n-one modem from Comcast. I have been considering checking into seeing if I can buy my own and return the Comcast modem. I never liked their new setup.

If your computer is refusing to forget a network there may be a larger issue. Reviewing the System log in Event Viewer may shine some light on this. You open Event Viewer by pressing the Windows + X key and selecting Event Viewer from the menu.

I understand that when you accept having a Comcast XFinity modem/router, part of that system becomes a Comcast WiFi hotspot that you have no control over.

That is true, it does become a WiFi hotspot. If I remember correctly, it can be turned off. The hotspot is totally separate and to use it they have to sign-in with their Comcast info. If one signs in and does anything illegal, it will trace back to their account.

I prefer complete ownership of my cable modem and my router. For years I wasn't aware that I could own my own cable modem and stop paying rental fees. I could have purchased several cable modems for what I paid in rental fees over the years. But no more!

I started using the Comcast modem when I switched to their VoIP. I used my own Netgear routers. It wasn't until I let them talk me into switching to WiFi 6 that I started using there all-n-one modem. It works but I think the Netgear routers were better. With Comcast there isn't much one can change. Plus, without an external antenna I don't get the WiFi range I use to get. That's why I setup the Rock Space extender. I need it to get a strong enough signal to my laptop when I'm outside in my shed (mancave).

I was at BestBuy several years ago to buy a new NetGear router and a store rep talked me into a NetGear Mesh system. I had never heard of a mesh system at that time and had my doubts, but since I could return it if it didn't work, I gave it a try. It worked significantly better than anything I had ever used before, and I had strong WiFi everywhere in my house and anywhere on my property. It's still running today and when I finally replace it, it will be with another mesh system.

Having internet, VoIP and WiFi 6 through Comcast I'm not sure what options are available for me. My old setup worked much better. I had the Comcast modem/VoIP and my own Netgear router. The Netgear router had dual antennae's and was very customizable.

I also have Comcast. I have Comcast Cable TV and Comcast Internet and WiFi. I need reliable Internet for my trading and Comcast is the best choice for me. At home our cell phones use WiFi. I choose not to use VoIP on my cable modem.

My current system:

NetGear Orbi RBR20 Mesh

We need the VoIP. When we had a ground line, we were always having problems. I also live in an area where we can't depend on our cell signal.
