Since the last 3 Windows updates on March 11, my audio is always muted on start-up. Is there some way to change its default back to normal, please?

If it was mine I'd get a new copy of the audio driver from the PC/audio card maker & reinstall it.
And I'd stop WU from including hardware driver updates.
Enable or Disable Include Drivers with Windows Updates - ElevenForumTutorials
And I'd start checking for driver updates from the PC/hardare maker(s) every so often.
And I'd keep all downloaded driver files as well as making driver backups.

I do all this in addition to making monthly system images.

First run your sound troubleshooter. settings>system>troubleshoot>other troubleshooters>audio>RUN

Whether it's your issue or not, I had this issue for a while. This worked for me.
Start playng a video in your browser. Go to settings>system>sound>volume mixer.
Make sure volume is not muted. (a red X through the little speaker icon to the right)
Select your browser in the list of Apps. If it's muted unmute it.
Under Apps, make sure volume for browser and system sounds are turned up to 100

Try Super God mode from GitHub as per link.
This has all the original troubleshooters and more ( including sound ) removed by Windows 11 some time ago,

It takes away the over thinking. as sound adjustment has so many interactive parts.

Sound is often a problem with Realtek ,especially on reinstall

Download Super_God_Mode.ps1 and SuperGodMode-EasyLauncher.bat from the GitHub repo. Run the .bat file as admin—it launches a GUI to scan your system and create a "Super God Mode" folder (customize output path if needed).

Finding Troubleshooter Folder​

Open the generated Super God Mode folder in File Explorer. Look inside the Deep Links subfolder for troubleshooter shortcuts, like direct access to Windows Defender and built-in troubleshooters.
