So, I decided to clean install Win11. I made an AIO .ISO from UUP DUMP of the build, and placed on USB for booting by Rufus 3.15. I made my backups and copied relevant directories that had settings and such else where so I could clean 2 drives, NVMe #1 for C and NVMe #2 for D.

Installation went without a hitch. Fast, too.

However, when it came to using this tutorial to move drives, my first attempt went haywire. You can read about my experiences with that failed install starting from this post.

I fixed that issue, and Windows 11 is now cleanly installed on my system, with the \Users tree moved to D.

However, I have noticed 2 issues thus far:

1) Snipping tool is the old snipping tool from Windows 10, not the new one. It still prompts me to use Snip and Sketch.

2) The Windows Store is still the old style, not the new style (and I suspect that is what is affect the snipping tool as well).

If I find any more issues, I'll add them above.

I've checked for updates numerous times in Windows Store - it has updated, more than once, but it is still the old style.

I've used this fix for the store: Microsoft Store new UI

Issue 1 should clear up when MS store finishes the updates to the app

I already used it before, on the upgrade, so I know what it is - it's almost exactly the same as Snip and Sketch, except that there is a 5 second delay option added to 3 and 10 seconds.

But I'm reporting it because it hasn't shown up again like it should - with all updates in place and accounted for in both Windows Update and Windows Store.

John, after a clean install, you (your PC) is naturally not automatically joined Insider program. After clean installing .132, I had the same issue with old Store and Snipping Tool / Snip & Sketch, until I joined the PC for Insider program and restarted. Those updates are only offered to Insiders, not if the PC has not joined.

After a restart, Store and Snipping Tool were automatically updated.

Adding to my previous post, this is how Insider settings look after a clean install:

Insider.jpg

Not joining, you will still receive build upgrades as long as they come as cumulative updates, but you will not get updates only offered to certain channels. To get all app updates, you need to join that PC to dev channel.

I was also quite surprised to see old Store and Snipping Tool after a clean 22000.132 install. Now, in hindsight, it's logical. Preview Store apps will only be offered when the PC has joined Insider program.

Yup - it's the little details that always cause consternation lol.

Thanks again for the reminder though. I (eventually) would have made it through every single setting in Windows Settings, but I had been poking around trying to fix little issues here and there, and just missed that one.

Has anyone tried updating from the ISO from inside a running earlier build? I have an earlier build on a Windows to Go setup, I also have the Microsoft Beta 132.

I can easily enough use Rufus to overwrite the installed version but I thought about adding a copy of the 132 ISO to the WtG install and mounting and running the installer from Inside the Win 11 WtG Install.

It should be the same as running the install from inside any other bare metal, (not a VM) but I've never tried it before

Has anyone tried updating from the ISO from inside a running earlier build? I have an earlier build on a Windows to Go setup, I also have the Microsoft Beta 132.

Yes, I have done it once or twice. In addition, as I make ISO for each new build, I test each by doing a repair install as soon as I have uploaded ISO to my OneDrive. Never any issues. As you for sure know, repair install is just a normal in-place upgrade, only difference being that you "upgrade" using the same build.

Two questions:
  1. Why .132, instead of the latest .160?
  2. Why not upgrade through Windows Update?
If answer to 1. is that you specidically want .132, then 2. is irrelevat, because WU would give you .160.

I recommend .160 through WU. Depending on hardware, it takes some 5 to 10 minutes. An in-place upgrade, again depending on hardware takes anything from 30+ minutes to an hour or more. In case of W2G, it might even take more.

@Kari
It's more of an idea / desire to try something I've not done before - the WtG i'm using is on a 1TB NVME drive connected to my desktop via a Thunderbolt 3 [10Gb] USB-c connection. ... just seeing what I can do with it for Future potential uses - It can be an alternative to VM and a dual boot for testing.

Is the 160 available on the MS download site for Beta, or is it just on the Dev or UUDP ?

I may try that next

@barman58: please run and post CrystalDiskMark results from your TB3 NVMe hook-up. I'm curious to see what kinds of throughput and data rates you'll get through that connection. TIA,

OK Ed - quick tests on the NVMe - the port is not actually marked as Thunderbolt 3 but Is USB3.2 ver.2 rated The NVME is a WD Blue [a spare cheap drive for general storage ]

Just for comparison this is my internal system drive [1TB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS M.2 PCIe]

CrystalDiskMark_20210825184107.png

If you need a specific test for your needs let me know The tests were performed on a system that was not specifically setup to perform the tests, and in fact was running Chrome with Nine open windows (all the DM forums and some other stuff), it was also streaming a HD video stream to a 4k Screen. System 1 in my specs

My original real world test was via a USB3.2 ver1 and I found the Windows 11 install was very usable - for testing purposes

@Kari In the end I just decided to overwrite the OS on my NVME drive with the 160 version - time to install - around 45 .. ... seconds from ISO to Windows installed

I'm now wondering if the Rufus ISO install technology could be used to install to internal disks

If you mean what I think you mean, as in using an internal disk to make a 'bootable' installer, yes, it can. But it requires some very specific settings in your BIOS / UEFI.

He (rufus dev) writes himself:

Also, a couple other alternatives to Rufus shown, one of which should work perfectly fine for writing to internal drive.

Another option would be to connect the drive externally as a removable, build it, and then connect it internally. Once built you could probably get away with just replacing the .WIM / .ESD files using one or two of @Kari's tutorials.

The only reason I know that Rufus CAN do it is that my old rig used a ThermalTake level 10 GT case, which had 5 hot swap drive bays on the side, which is where I kept my mechanical drives. They always showed as removable, and the secret key combo would make them available for building bootable installation drives. Was great when I made on on my 80 GB Intel SSD.....
