WinAero Tweaker v1.64.2.0-No "Remove Shortcut Arrow" selection

If I tried messing with my sons laptop, he’d go nuclear.

Curioser and curioser...

Winaero Tweaker 1.64.2.0 (installed about 10 hours ago)
Broke my shortcut arrow icons too. Just about 15 mins ago.
The only thing that's changed is installing 1.64.2.0 over top of 1.64.0
(didn't do either of the OOB Windows updates)

The ones in the RED boxes had the small shortcut arrows turn into large white sheets.
Didn't have the problem with 1.64.0

Image1.webp

Didn't happen to ThisPC or Recycle Bin, or any of the shortcuts that were pinned to the Taskbar.
Just the ones with the edited shortcut arrows.

Restored from a ten day old MR backup, which had Winaero 1.64.0 installed.
I installed 1.64.0 on December 3rd 2025.

Anyway... time to make a new backup.

What's missing may be the fact, your son's Window might have 3rd-party software installed to modify Windows' appearance. And therefore WinAero can't remove the arrow.

Under Settings app, bring up Apps / Installed Apps. Scroll down the list and see if there's ExplorerPatcher or StartAllBack.
Nope. There's nothing installed that I can't easily recognize.
After installing WinAero Tweaker on my wife's computer. I discovered that the "Remove Shortcut Arrow" is not present either. I checked via the Account Your Info and she has Admin privileges. She also has an account labeled Admin. I used Switch User to sign into this account. I ran WinAero Tweaker again and the "Remove Shortcut Arrow" is now present! I checked the box, rebooted and the arrows are gone from the shortcuts.

Apparently, all "Admin" privileges are NOT equal! I wonder how I can get these accounts full Admin status??? Why do they say Admin when they are not?

Anyway... time to make a new backup.
Sorry you now have a problem, but at least now my issue makes some sense. It's not just me doing something stupid that caused my problem. Something is amiss with this version.

I'd have to agree.

To make sure, you can always right-mouse click the Winaero Tweaker icon directly and "run as an Administrator".

Or setting it to this should be sufficient....

I prefer the right-mouse click but that's my preference, unless it's something (like Powershell) that I open as an admin, all the time.

I can't believe I didn't think of doing this! Thanks, Man! When I went into properties advanced ok, I got a popup stating "You must have Administrator Rights to make this change." I clicked OK, and it completed the change. Right now I am logged into my Personal Acct. (with Admin Rights according to my Account info), so this proves my acct has Admin rights. However, I just now started WinAero Tweaker with Admin rights and it no longer has the "Remove Shortcut Arrow" option available. So apparently my OS thinks I have Admin rights, but WinAero Tweaker thinks I don't. (n)

I always run the Powershell icon as an admin. That's why I have it's box ticked like what you see in post #27. For Winaero Tweaker, that's optional (for me, anyway) whether I tick it's box or not. I usually don't make many changes in there.

Since @Ghot seems to have the same problem as you do, you might just as well try one of the examples in post #29 and see if that works for you. But whichever one of those 3 methods in that link that you choose, always make sure that you re-boot the machine after you change the setting. Otherwise the process isn't complete.

My only question now is, why does my account named "Admin" have *more* Admin rights than my personal User account? Damn I hate Windows...

So apparently my OS thinks I have Admin rights, but WinAero Tweaker thinks I don't. (n)
Try running the Winaero executable file as an admin

Thanks, but as I stated above, doing this from my personal acct it still doesn't show the "remove shortcut arrow" option.

Not referring to running it from an admin account, talking about running the program in admin mode - right-click on the program executable > Run as Administrator

Right-mouse click the Winaero program's icon. Don't right-mouse click it's shortcut. You won't find the option there.

If that doesn't work then once again, try the methods linked in post #29.

See my Post #33. I have done that without success.

See photos below. I have also checked these settings and tried Running without success. It *only* appears when run from my Admin acct.

uh oh

Winaero Tweaker 1.64.2.0 is being "flagged" by Defender as of February 2026:

No need to post multiple times the same thing:
2 solutions have been discussed at length over the last 3 weeks that solve the problem.

1- How to run Winaero Tweaker when MS Defender is preventing you to do so.

2- The other solution is to run winaero in compatibility mode (win8)
