Windows 11 24H2 Version 10.0.26100.2605
a very annoying bug, and its been present since the launch of windows 11....for example, minimized windows suddenly come back to focus when you launch a different program, or even just by moving the mouse (especially when on-screen keyboard is active), or focus is moved away from the active window to the desktop.....anybody else having the same issue, or found a solution ?

Can you please give an example of what you did when you lost focus on a window?
I myself never experienced that, unless I am using some program that is demanding focus in all circumstances.

I minimized a window (ntlite) that was doing some work, then launched virtualbox and started a vm, only for ntlite to come back to focus (wasn't done with its work)....it happens a lot with different programs, and seems a bit random.

I've searched the net, and found many threads complaining from similar issues, with hit-or-miss workarounds, none have worked for me

As I don't use NTLite I would not be able to check it for you.
But I am a very regular user of VirtualBox and with that it never happened to me that when I used a Virtualbox VM, in the meantime the focus was taken over by some other app.

To my opinion it has to be some app or a combination of apps that is causing the problems you have. Maybe it is useful if you would post a list of the apps you normally are using.

Please fill in the computer specs in your profile too. Windows 11 is all we know now about your system! Version and all kind of similar stuff. Like specified in 'My Computer' (please click the link below my answer to get an example), may be important to get help.

In that case I think the only thing that you can do is uninstall all apps that are not Windows-specific, like Windows Explorer, MS Edge, Windows Photoviewer and MS Paint are.

So uninstall (from your list):
7z
Steam
NTLite
Rufus
And others that you have been installing in the past.

And just keep VirtualBox on it to test if the problem has gone.
If it has gone, install other apps one by one and do intensive tests inbetween to find out which one causes the problem.

No garantee that you will find the reason for taking over focus, but better than nothing.
But it takes a lot of work to find out it that way. Better you would learn to use Task Manager. Is not that hard to learn, there are many tutorials to find in the Internet.

You might have a look here:

BTW. The problem will probably not be caused by a bug in Windows 11, but most likely by a bug in one of the apps you are using...

I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd check to see if anyone found a better way to sort this out.

I have a similar issue on my work computer which is fairly new to me lenovo laptop. It was NIB, but kind of old. No clue why and it didn't always happen. Just started happening a few weeks ago and I don't recall installing anything new since then.

I notice it the most with Putty terminals. It's very irritating. I have many shortcuts on my dock. I click and it opens a window for that shortcuts server and logs me in. About 50% of the time, the new window gets dropped to the background and I either have to alt+tab through every window to get to it, or I have to manually click on it to get focus.

I tried using process explorer to watch what opens around it when it happens, but it's so random that it's hard to predict. I thought it was a lenovo software package doing it, as it came up every single time I opened a putty window. So I uninstalled it, rebooted, then it started happening again. Now all I see usually is svchost.exe or msmpeng.exe

I remote desktop into my work computer from my main computer at home so I don't have to use a kvm or the tiny screen on the laptop. I've used 3 different remote desktop applications and the issue happens on all of them. But it didn't always happen.

I don't know if this issue is the same, but for my issue, I found out later that the cause was Windows on-screen keyboard (Accessibility), and it is a very old bug (supposedly from XP days) that Microsoft never bothered fixing....it goes like this: you write on some program using on-screen keyboard, minimize OSK, launch another program, and then when you move the mouse, the focus return to the original window that you last inputted to using OSK....if I remember correctly, some guy on SuperUser forums suggested the fix was editing the executable of OSK using a hex editor or something similar, but I got lost in the instructions and just chose to adapt..

Even if this works, "sfc /scannow" will consider this hex edit as file corruption and replace the file. Be warned.
can the executable be copied elsewhere and the modifications get applied on the copy, and then a shortcut is made to the modified executable?
the problem is, even if I wanted to apply this "fix", I couldn't find those offsets referenced... but then I'm no expert.

Thanks for the info.

I don't have the OSK enabled and never even tried to use it.

To prevent SFC from replacing a modded file, you need to copy the same file into the WinSxS component folder that SFC scans from. There could be several older versions of the folder, depending if you never cleaned updates from Windows.

Code:
> fsutil hardlink list \Windows\System32\osk.exe

\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-osk_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.26100.7309_none_4688c0f509ee28c6\osk.exe <-- Check your version!!
\Windows\System32\osk.exe

Using a TrustedInstaller rights tool, like PowerRun or @LesFerch's Right-Click Tools, overwrite the current WinSxS folder's version of the file with your own.

But this doesn't solve two problems:
1. Understanding how to patch OSK.exe if you're not a x86 assembly code programmer. Unless someone writes a patch tool for you.

2. Replacing the WinSxS file only blocks SFC. DISM /Restore-Health will detect the WinSxS file fails to match the manifest's digital hash, and tries to replace the WinSxs version. Which is why you're always supposed to run DISM before SFC on a corrupted system.

@olds97_lss Whether your issue or not, Focus issues plagued a lot of people in 24h2 and the issues were addressed in an update some time ago. I do not remember what update. If you are running 24h2, install the enablement package for 25h2 and it's subsequent updates. It might well straighten it out.

@olds97_lss Whether your issue or not, Focus issues plagued a lot of people in 24h2 and the issues were addressed in an update some time ago. I do not remember what update. If you are running 24h2, install the enablement package for 25h2 and it's subsequent updates. It might well straighten it out.
Kind of funny you say that... the computer with the issues has 25H2. No clue when it got that. In the "about", it says installed on 1/9/2025 since 25h2 apparently didn't start rolling out until September 2025, I'm not sure what that date is referencing. I got the computer from my IT group in July 2025.

Edition Windows 11 Pro
Version 25H2
Installed on ‎1/‎9/‎2025
OS build 26200.7705
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.291.0

I did just run windows update on both today, not sure what was installed, but there was one waiting and after, I ran the check again and there was another, so I installed that also.

Oh, looking at the history, it says 25H2 was installed on 10/17/2025.

These were what I updated to today:
2026-01 Update (KB5078127) (26200.7628)

Then after that:
2026-01 Preview Update (KB5074105) (26200.7705)

My home computer is a machine I forced w11 to run on using rufus. Not sure if the 25h2 will end up on it or not, but I don't feel like going through all that again to find out if I can force it. I haven't noticed any weird focus issues on it, but I don't open many windows at a time on it. Even when I do open 4 or 5, I've never had focus get lost.
