Windows 11 24H2+ Compatibility with 8th Gen Intel Platforms

For customer on tight budget, installed latest Windows 11 build, on Dell 7490 Latitude laptop (8th gen i5, nvme, 16gb DDR4).

Install seemed to be fine, then realised Windows reported no audio device installed.
Tried installing DELL audio driver, failed.
Tried updating BIOS, Win 11 reported due to Bitlocker running, no update possible.

Never had the above installing Win 11 24H2, so hosed install, and re-installed from trusty Win 11 24H2 USB.

Machine is fine.


Google AI states many reported issues, with later Win 11 versions, and 8th gen cpu platforms, does this mean the "free ride" of Win 11, on near free, older "compatible" platforms is over !?

Thankfully, 10th Gen DELL Latitude laptops/Desktops, are not that much more in price.

Not that it matters but my Intel Haswell and Intel Kaby Lake have never been officially supported. They originally ran Windows 10.

I'm guessing 8th gen platforms are approx 9-10x years old, so not suprising, there are issues, with Win 11 2024+ builds.

Shame, as 8th Gen i5 with 16gb DDR4 and nvme drive, can run Win 11, comfortably, for non gaming, none video/music production, just office tasks.

I have an HP notebook (m/y 2018) with 8th gen CPU. No problems with 25H2 Win11 installation and running. Audio is fine. I am not mentioning my desktop PC (m/b 2014 with 4th gen CPU) which runs fine on 25H2 Win11, the latest iteration. So either your audio chip is playing foul or audio driver installation has gone bad.

Just to add: Windows 11 25H2 runs much better on older hardware than on new hardware, in my opinion. There is no secret on older hardware that has not yet been discovered. But newer hardware contains many unknowns.
