If your Office 2007 isn't activated you'd soon find out. It would prompt you every time you open an Office app to activate it.

In any Office app, click the round Office button at the top left and select the ...Options button at the bottom right.




In Resources in the Options window you'll find the Activate and About buttons.

You can still use the built-in MSOffice 2007 Help.
If your built-in Help reports nnnn yyyy is now retired and shows Connected to Office Online in the bottom-right corner just click on it & choose Show content only from this computer. Then it will work.

So far it worked and activated on the Dell 7530, which is the 3rd instance of student word 2007.
Enter key to install, start word, it tells you activate over internet or phone, I chose internet, and it activated.

So now activated on 3 PC's. Which is the limit for student version, guess I will find out!

I have not, why do that? How big is it?

If for some reason the NVME drive failed, won't MS let me reinstall word to a new drive on same hardware without going thru hoops?

A system image is your best defence against problems.
A system image can turn a catastrophe into a mere inconvenience.
A system image protects everything you have on your disk.
My system images vary in size. For this computer they are about 30GB each. They are smaller on my other computers.
My system images for this computer can be restored in well under half an hour - all Windows settings & updates and all applications & their settings back without any reinstallations or activations being necessary.

MAybe I can do that, I do have lots of spare Harddrives and a sata enclosure for usb.

How about using a usb drive 3.0 of 256gb? This laptop has a 3.1 usb port

You're much better off using an HDD or an SSD for reliability and speed reasons.

Use the USB for recovery media purposes, rather than as a storage location for the image file.

Your choices affect how resilient your overall backup will be. It's entirely up to you.
The only golden rule is that your backups are put on an external drive so that they can be disconnected when not in use and are therefore not going to get wiped out by a malware attack or if your computer melts.
HDDs & SSDs [even if connected through a USB enclosure] are much more reliable than USB sticks.
I alternate the external disks I use. This month it'll be one disk, next month it'll be the other. So even if both my computer and a backup drive melted at the same time, I'd still have a system image left. I tend to make a new system image each month before the second Tuesday so that I have a recent one to fall back on if a Windows update wrecks my computer [not that it ever has].
Even if you only use a single external disk you will still have an effective backup scheme.
As a very rough estimate of the size, take a look in File explorer to see how much storage you use on the OS drive. System imaging utilities will generally compress their contents to about half the size that they used on your OS drive.

My own files get backed up in several ways. Users' files will generally be backed up separately because they will change much more rapidly than the overall system.
- Hourly backup of key files onto an SD card that lives in my otherwise unused SD card slot. This only protects me from my own mistakes and then only if I realise I've made a mistake within an hour. This backup would get corrupted by any malware that attacked my computer.
- Almost daily backup of all my own files onto my other computers.
- About a weekly backup onto one of my external disks.
As a very rough estimate of the size, take a look in File explorer [whilst logged in to an Admin account] to add up how much storage each user uses in C:\Users\UserName
Many file backup utilities also involved compressing files. My scheme doesn't as I backup my files as simple copies using the built-in utility RoboCopy. But it has a steep learning curve whereas most file backup utilities are made to be easy to use.

MOVING ON .................... Thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate all replies but have now sorted out my problem.

Whilst Microsoft Office has been my mainstay for many years, I have only simple needs of word and Excel, so all the other bells and whistles are useless to me. The business of limited support of some systems with no support for others, it has always grated with me that MS do seem to be only concerned with the end returns of money. The 365 system to me was a disaster and total waste of £60 for a few months of sweat and tears.

I have looked at Libra Office, not for the fact that it is totally free, but as another system that would work for my simple needs. Downloaded it yesterday and this morning tried letters and spreadsheets on it. Editing existing word and Excel on it and saving it and have been pleasantly surprised to find how easy it is, It works perfectly for me and is so similar as to be a perfect solution.

I will be making a donation to Libra Office to help them continue with their free service and support whenever needed.

This am, I saw word 2007 had a sp3 update pending, I installed that and restarted and word is still licensed and activated .
So seems true that for the student 2007 version, you are allowed installs onto 3 PCs. (Early post I quoted a guy said 3 installs for student and home versions)

I do recall there is some problem with opening new word files from new version of word and that there is something that can be installed for word 2007 to read them properly. Anyone recall that?

I have no use for a word processor, Only my wife who works at a high school does use word

I'm glad that LibreOffice meets your needs I thought it would. My laptops are all second hand, a few of which already had MS Office pre-installed. For the rest I have installed LibreOffice.

When I decided to move from my old PC with windows 7 to a new laptop and windows 11,m I appreciated that I would need to start a litte more learning and I'm getting there.

The supplier ( Asus Vivobook Pro 15 Oled screem, Intek i9 16GB Ram and 1TB SSD) had installed Microsoft Windows 11 but as some of you will know, continual bombardment to use the new 365 eventually wore me down and I subscribed a few months ago. Then it started. messed up my photographs and still dont know how, kept causing problems and saying it would make a correction, which sometimes worked but then the problem came up again so I decided a month ago to get rid of it. That was not easy as they try to cover up the uninstall, but hopefully it was done and I stopped the bank renewal in March.

I am not too IT minded and it confuses me when I am told to use .docx format. When I loaded a word or Excel document and edited it I just hit the save as (title0 and put it in a new folder which I have as LIBRA FILE. A simple mind, but it seems to wor. One spreadsheet of Excel even moved with a password that I had saved and needed to open it,

I have typed a couple on new letters and saved and edited others, so I am very happy and will now be making a donation as I feel the LO tram are worth it. At least I wont have the problem of remewal and no support that MS have.

From the days of xl - to windows 95 and then 7 Ultimate 2007, it is refreshing to find Libra Office, I should have looked years ago.
