Has anyone been able to get the Windows 11 preview to work with Oracle VM VirtualBox? I've tried a couple of times. But when the choice of channels comes up for the Insider program, the only option available is Release Preview Channel, which limits you to Windows 10. Dev channel and Beta channel are both grayed out.

I've been able to get Win 11 to run fine in VMWare Workstation Player through the Beta channel. I know the Insider preview is supposed to work with VMs. But VirtualBox isn't playing nicely. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi there
Try using the ISO from UUPDUMP and install the VM.
I'm not a big fan of Virtual Box (Each to their own) but in theory it should work.

I have it working, but slowly - and that's on an older laptop that is nominally incompatible.
The build is from UUP DUMP - that took me several attempts before it downloaded completely, and a lot of processing.

During the installation I received
Something went wrong
You can try again, or skip for now

OOBEKEYBOARD

Try again or Skip
and skipped...
then later

Something went wrong
But you can try again
OOBESETTINGMULTIPAGE

Try again…
..so I selected 'Try again' - and that quite quickly proceeded.

However, most windows are square...not rounded.

Thanks.. well.. I was just doing that to see my shared folder.. which I now can (demonstrating additions are active) - but file explorer's corners are as square as they could be..

Another odd thing that happens from time to time - a repeated short sound (at least 2 different pitches) at about 3x per second - ding ding ding ding... like musical hammering..

First, make sure Guest Additions have been installed for the VM. Then, in the settings for the VM, go to Display and check the box labeled Enable 3D Acceleration which is under the Graphics Controller. Boot the VM and enjoy rounded corners.

The ding, ding, ding is a bug in VirtualBox 6.1.22 for some Windows guests. When it happens, you can usually stop it (temporarily) by adjusting the volume control slightly up or down in the guest. If it's troublesome, you can go to the Audio settings for the guest and change Host Audio Driver to Null Audio Driver and uncheck Enable Audio Output. No sound is better than sound that drives you crazy :) I've only ever had this problem with Windows 7 guests on Windows 10 hosts (linux hosts are fine). I doubt that Windows 7 guest problems are a priority for Oracle, but if it's happening in Windows 11 guests maybe they'll get it fixed.

I installed Windows 10 in the VM, selected Dev channel, ran the updates and got Win 11 Dev build. I can't activate though as Win 10 was installed without a valid licence - I'm keeping that on my 'real' Windows 10 install for when the final Win 11 is ready

Although this is not the way it is supposed to work, I can say that when I installed the Leak in a Hyper-V VM, I used the same Windows 7 key that I used to upgrade my main install to Windows 10 several years ago to activate the leak.

If you purchased a key from Microsoft or Windows 10 came pre-installed by the OEM, then you're probably better off not attempting to use it again, but if it is an upgrade, grab another key if you can find one.

I had a Microsoft TechNet accout back in the day, and it gave me 10 keys of each edition of Windows 7, so I have plenty of Pro and Home keys never used for anything. I've used just about every Ultimate key for an install of VM, and a few of the Pros, but none of hte Pro N / Home / Home N / Ultimate N keys.

Just don't go using a leaked key you find on the internet or a cheap $5 key that you buy from some nondescript retailer on eBay / Amazon. Better to stay away from those.

I'll try my Windows 7 key, it was a retail licence. If it activates it's Microsoft problem if it's not licenced as far as I'm concerned. I need to find the disc box

Hi folks
Has anybody got acceptable performance on a W11 (the proper - not previous leaked build) VM running in VBOX from a W10 (recent build) HOST.
This thing runs slower than molasses or a one footed dog on a perfectly smooth icepond. - it might be my lack of experience with VBOX but there's mega oodles of power in the HOST hardware. VMWare performs perfectly, and HYPER=V also (again in spite of my lack of experience).

I tested again in a W10 system without HYPER-V and VMWare to be 100% positive that those applications weren't causing problems running with VBOX.

So far miserable fail !!!

Cheers

Yeah I'm running Win 11 in VirtualBox with a Win 10 host. It's not fast but it's as expected, certainly faster than previous versions were. It will run like mad on real hardware

On either host, do you see a green turtle icon in the lower right of the guest window? If so, then a hyper-v component is the cause of the problem. In my experience, once any windows feature related to hyper-v has been turned on, turning that feature back off may not be sufficient. I've had to do
Code:
bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off
followed by a reboot.

It does work on Manjaro Gnome 40 w/ kernel 5.14.0-1-MANJARO (rc2). Had to search for the host-modules using pamac. One quirk that should be noted - if you are using an ISO downloaded from UUPDUMP (as I do) you must change the extension .ISO to .iso or Virtualbox won't recognize it. One of these days I will mention this on one of their forums but I really don't care for Virtualbox.VirtualBox_Windows 11_21_07_2021_16_03_20.png

Shipinomore here. I just installed windows 11 on virtual box. some minor problem. at first it said that the pc could not run 11. I installed windows 11 updating my running windows 10 and no problems. cpu was the only issue noted on the test why not windows 11.
after several more tries and not making any changes I got into doing a clean install. all went ok but could not get signed into microsoft account
another couple of tries registering and all was ok. then installed the tools and got full screen.
the whole install questions and screens was not what I was use to.
I installed into virtual box from the ISO file created with uu dump.
not running the very latest virtual box but the one earlier. forgot to check the box enable 3d but seems ok as is.
I am satisfied with it so far.

Hi there
Works perfectly on KVM/QEMU - I really don't like Virtual Box but that's choice. I don't get the rounded corner effect on W11 but I assume that others running W11 on various VM software systems also have similar problems.

You can run Hyper-V on Home host
