Solved Windows 11 Clean Install Advice on Final Release

Hello All

Wondering if it's advisble to disconnect my other drives when i do the clean install for Windows 11 soon as available for my main Gaming Desktop?

Debating on Putting 4TB External back internally in the system, and then using the Western Digital 1TB as Extra External Storage

only question i have at the moments

I would unhook all other drives when doing a clean install. I'd unhook the internet too.

IMHO, When something like this event coming up, I disconnect everything but the C: If it turns out to be successful and after clean up and back up made, I start adding back my storage drives etc. A while back, both my storage drives were RAW after an update. So I do no want to see that again. Chances of that happening again are most likely ZERO, but.

Yeah so think early on the day when i decide to do clean install of 11, then will do dust clean out, unhooking the other drives, getting it installed, then rehooking up other drives after first backup done

Sounds like a go. That scheme will certainly prevent boot files being loaded onto the wrong drives. As Meebers said, long odds, but why not make it certain.

I never disconnect other drives. To do so on my laptop would require me to remove the bottom cover every time. My desktop computer has 3 M.2 SSDs, a couple of SATA SSDs and 1 spinning hard drive. If Windows setup puts the boot files on a drive that I don't want it to, it takes me 5 minutes to correct. It would take me longer just to open the computer to disconnect drives than it would for me to create boot files on the drive and partition that I want them on.

I've Only done it 1 time so far disconnected the other PC drives--despite its a bit of a hassle, does take a bit longer though, especially with my cable situation on this Desktop, but i know i can get it done just like i did the first time i installed this M.2 drive

When i attempted to move the Game SSD from Drive Tray area to Extra SSD mount that case had, except even though plugged the data cable into motherboard other Sata port, that should've been working, as with M.2 i should've only lost Port 5-6, 2,3,4 should still be working

So yeah a little hassle with my cables to disconnect other drives, but still do able

That could use a major clean up. Proper cable management will help you out. Just saying.

Yeah need to do the proper cable management, this was like this from local shop that built system in June 2020, unforuately system wasn't built by me myself, but will get the cable management done as best i can after next dust clean out scheduled for early on October 5th

A shop did that? Wow.. That was just poor work at best.

Well they possibly just transferred all the cables i had connected to the power supply from my old Asus G11CD-K Tower.

June 2020 said it was done, and ready for pickup, first time opened it for dust clean out about 3-4 months later, decided well maybe i'll move the Sata ssd to one of those mounts, and temp mount my 8TB Seagate drive internally to check it faster for errors, in the end when i couldn't locate a working sata power cord, i was like back on the 3.5 inch tray for this ssd and fix it later, after i got some nylon zip ties, and can clean up wiring more

Still Need to sometime upgrade CPU cooler as well
Stock Cooler used on Intel I7 10700, Hope to tackle that Christmas or Birthday in February 2022

I would unhook any external drives but internal ones should not be a problem. There's no need to disconnect from the internet either.

As far as cables go. If everything works and the system stays cool, I don't care how they look. Mine could be a little neater after the upgrades I've done but oh well.

Yeah i ended up unplugging all the internal drives, installing on my M.2 SSD, then then rehooking up the drives when install was done lol, did it without net, then added my microsoft account later on. Been working well since Install on October 6th

*Now Unplugging Drives on laptop too much of a hassle lol, next clean install when next big Windows 11 Update comes, don't plan to this time lol i don't think*

As for Cable Management still working on that, gotta get more zip ties, and still redo some of the wires, found out why SSD wouldn't work on the SSD mount on rear of motherboard tray, the 2nd Sata Power plug wasn't even plugged into power supply, can't see to plug it back in though as yet

What decision did you make for your 4TB and 1TB drives? On my new desktop I have the 1TB NVMe drive as the OS drive. I installed my Samsung 1TB 860 EVO drive and transferred my user folders to it. This makes for smaller backup images. I backup my system drive weekly, and my data drive every few months. My important files such as my finance data gets saved automatically to drive D when I close the program and weekly by Macrium Reflect to an external drive.

Well Installed the 4TB drive as Storage, 500GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 as OS Drive, and Samsung 860 Evo 1TB SSD as Game Drive

WD Black 1TB External in another enclosure currently
4TB drive internal at moment, though hardly using any space on it lol

*I May swap the 4TB with WD Black 1TB by Birthday though, and just restore image to it--not sure yet* used space right now 345GB of 3.63TB

Only have One M.2 port, and always had small Drives as OS Drive, and bigger drives for Gaming or Storage

I use my large drives for my images. I have two desktops and two laptops I keep backed up. And to make my need for extra drive space worse I use 4 backup programs. Macrium and AOMEI are my main backup programs.

It looks like you have space for a hot swap hdd caddy. Then you could keep some of the drives in storage cases and use as required. One of mine is an Akasa which has a 3.5 and a 2.5 capacity and both can be used at the same time.

Sorry, I got your pc muddled up with Dch48's one, looking properly, your Thermaltake is one of the modern style of cases which don't have any front fittings for 5.25 or 3.5 accessories.

Yeah my case doesn't have any front 5.25 or 3.5 inch area at all, mine is like Plastic glass looking in front of the 3 Intake Fans, and Tempered Glass side Panel

I picked this case out at the local shop in 2020. I should've probably picked one of the Fractual design cases. But those were more cost at the time, so i picked this one lol, intake cooling not the best, but someday may upgrade to airflow optimized case
